You're right about older horror movies, they knew how to build atmosphere. That joke you made in the beginning when he said "I gotta find somebody" and you said, "Like a girlfriend?" Yeah... watch the fourth one. You might recognize Brad Dourif (Chucky) as Grima Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings. He's played lots of great psychos. The detective was played by Chris Sarandon, who was in the classic vampire flick 'Fright Night'. It's another great 80's horror film you need to check out.
