My favorite Spielberg movie ever, there is something about this movie that really gets to me, mainly because it is a First Contact movie, I prefer it over E.T., if you'd ask me.

2023-01-23 23:57:36 +0000 UTCIt’s hard to explain what it was like seeing this in the theater back in 1977. There had never been anything like it. There had been some old movies where everything was obviously fake and the stories were really over the top. And you have to remember that Star Wars had been released a few months before Close Encounters. We were fascinated by space and amazing graphics already. But even the aliens in Star Wars were comical and “unreal.” And it all happened “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” But Close Encounters felt real. And it looked real. And it was here and now. The movie blew us away but it also really freaked people out. It overwhelmed the public. Even though the aliens are “friendly,” it was still scary. I remember leaving the theater with my sister and my cousins. One of my cousins yelled “Look!” and pointed to the sky. People actually ducked and ran behind cars. I’m sorry to say I was one of them. In my defense I was only 11 years old. But there were adults hiding too. I can still hear my cousin laughing!
