Avada kedavra was created by dark wizards and witches (and there is the theory that the oldest of the 3 brothers created it) to slay opponents quickly in a duel. The reason all 3 are unforgivable is because in order to cast them you need the intent to do so, you have to want to control the person, you have to enjoy torturing to torture and you must have the intent to murder in order to kill. Only someone with sinister intentions can use these though I would argue the cruciatus curse is the worst as it's only use is to torture. You can use avada kedavra if your life is threatened and you know you will die and it's the only way you can defeat whoever you're fighting or as an act of mercy, and you'll see later what positive uses the imperius curse has. Also, Avada Kedavra cannot be blocked by any defensive spells because it's such a powerful curse born of old magic with the power to instantaneously take life. I wont spoil anything for later but you'll find out why harry survived the curse.
