For the space battle, they used unused footage from the first Star Wars film to insert Red Leader and Gold Leader in this battle. The fellow on the Death Star that looked familiar is Governor Tarkin, who was also in the first Star Wars. The actor passed away in 1994, but they used some fancy effects to recreate both him and Leia.

After this it gets a bit murky - and some people get a bit too heated if you don't conform to their opinion. Personally, I hope you do whatever makes you happy - and I'll be along for the ride :)
