Fun fact: the distress call we heard at the very start was provided by Sir Kenneth Brannagh, the actor/director who directed the first "Thor" film (which, if you remember, was also the first time we saw an Infinity Stone). Also, Thanos is not technically strong than the Hulk, but he's a much better fighter (since he's been going from planet to planet and wiping out half the population for over a thousand years). According to the writers and directors, Thanos already knew where five of the six stones were, but he knew people would move against him once he started going after them, so there was no point in doing so until he knew where all six were. When Nebula snuck onto his ship to try and kill him and got captured, he learned that Gamora knew where the Soul Stone was. That's why he's going after them now.
