For clarification, Tony DOES have a heart. The thing in his chest (a miniature arc reactor) is a energy device (essentially a battery... it is likely a cold fusion reactor) that powers an elecro-magnet in his chest. The magnet prevents the shards of metal from piercing his heart (from when the bomb exploded close to him in iron man 1). He also uses the arc reactor to power his iron man suit.
