Before Luke entered the cave, Yoda said Luke wouldn't need his weapons and Luke asked what was inside. Yoda said, "Only what you take with you." Luke took his weapons, meaning he took his fear and aggression with him. The Dark Side showed him his worst fear, facing Vader. When Luke killed him with his fear and aggression, the Dark Side showed him that he could become just like Vader, and we learn later that they are indeed connected. That's my take on it anyway. I'm impressed that you untangled the truth of Obi Wan's version of events from one viewing. But then again you are very insightful and I've seen you figure things out with a lot of films. The "truth from a certain point of view" was hard to swallow, knowing that the wise mentor could lie to Luke about something so huge. Loving these long versions! You make them so fun :D

I thought it was saying if Luke kills Vader, he would be taking his place (becoming him). He seemed to be reminded of this in ROJ when he cuts off Vader's mechanical hand and looks at his own. -- Then again, it could be saying both things.

Luke is stunned to find out that if he killed Vader, he would really be killing himself. He doesn't understand it at the time - until he learns who Vader really is. Also everyone reacts the same way when the movie ends - it definitely doesn't feel like 2 hours! Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the next movie :)
