A lot of people dont know the differences between being a nazi and being a soldier. The Waffen-SS was the military of the SS and to get into that, you had to fulfill some requirements. Those people were true believers of the Nazi ideologies. The Wehrmacht was the regular german military. Sure there were people who also shared the same views as hitler, but most were just serving either voluntarily or drafted. The only ones you can credit as 100% nazi were Landa and the Gestapo Major, since the Gestapo were the secret state police of the NS-Regime. Every other soldier that was portrait was most likely a regular solider in the Wehrmacht. The chances that the soldiers in the basement were regular soldiers are pretty high. And its also very likely that they were drafted and did not join on their own. Since at that point in time, D-Day already happened, the best of the germany army were either in the east or on the front in france to defend against the allies. So the ones in the basement were not priority soldiers, since they were in safe territory.

oh wow, my brain definitely read his name as Christopher every single time I saw his name 🤣 thanks for pointing that out!

You should look up all the subtleties Tarantino added to the opening scene. It'll blow your mind. For example, Landa's holding the girl's wrist while asking for milk was to check if her pulse was racing... Also, for the meeting with Emmanuelle/Shoshanna, he ordered the milk partly as a throwback, and also because Jewish people aren't allowed to have dairy products with animal products, such as strudel. Another way of making her nervous.

Band Apart is Quentin's production company. It's a reference to the title of a 1964 French New Wave film by Jean-Luc Godard, Bande a Part, or Band of Outsiders. It's been one of my favorites for at least 20 years. I may even like it better than Breathless. Definitely worth a pick up for any Criterion collectors out there.

I like "Basterds" for its humor. Some of the situations and dialogue are really funny while taking place under extreme tension, i.e. Donny confronting the uncooperative German sergeant, Fraulein von Hammersmark and her 'eye-talian' film friends being greeted by Hans Landa, etc. In case Camilla didn't self-correct herself during the editing process, it isn't 'Christopher' but 'Christoph', which rhymes with 'pissed off'. Thanks for all of your thoughts after the film. This was a fun watchalong!

I always get a kick out of hearing Lt. Aldo Raine's accent and seeing the rope burn around his neck. He's seen some things! lol
