Schindler's List - Full Length Reaction

today we're watching Schindler's List, the winner of a recent poll.

** please note: I will be filming and adding my post-movie thoughts in a few days. there were technical issues with what I had initially filmed right after viewing that I hadn't realized had occurred, causing me to need to re-film.

In the late 1990s, I participated in a minor supporting role for a piece of freeware software. There was another volunteer who was a known Holocaust denier. He was warned multiple times to stop posting off-topic rants on the subject in the online forum. As for the character Amon Goeth, as played by Ralph Fiennes, I think it may be a simplification to explain his murderous cruelty as just being 'evil'. As portrayed in the movie I think his behavior is more akin to what happens to a person who finds himself in a position of power when all accountability has been removed and there are no repercussions for their actions. History has shown some individuals will show their true character in these circumstances. Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, the Shah of Iran, Manuel Noriega, Vladimir Putin, the latter instigating changes in his government that made him eligible to be remain in power until 2036, and China's president Xi who, since 2018, can remain in power for life. Both Putin and Xi have done clean sweeps of people appointed to certain positions in order to guarantee rubber stamp approval of any policies. Dictators control exclusive state-run media so that the official news is the ONLY news available to the public. This type of ruthlessness is not the sole domain of either the right or left political leanings, as dictatorships in South American have seen both types.

First time I watched this movie when I as like 15 I was confused as to why the SS soldiers on the train platfrom were so concerned when Schindler threatened to have them sent to Russia. Then I watched Stalingrad from 1993 and understood lol nightmare fuel

Spielberg said filming Schindler's List was deeply emotional for him, as the subject matter forced him to confront elements of his childhood, such as the antisemitism he faced. He was one of many crew members who could not force themselves to watch during the shooting of the scene where aging Jews are forced to run naked while being selected by Nazi doctors to go to Auschwitz. Spielberg on his emotional state during filming: "I was hit in the face with my personal life. My upbringing. My Jewishness. The stories my grandparents told me about the Shoah. And Jewish life came pouring back into my heart. I cried all the time." The girl in red was 3 years old at the time of filming. Spielberg asked her not to watch the film until she was 18, but she watched it when she was 11, and says she was "horrified". Upon seeing the film again as an adult, she was proud of the role she played.

Good reaction. Thanks. Arguably a duty as a citizen of the world is to watch this movie, which is still relevant today in that autocratic fascists filled with nationalist racist hate still exist. We can never let our guard down. Oskar Schindler doing the list + the appreciation shown by those on the list = inspirational.

I look forward to watching this later today. This is the most expensive black-and-white film to date. The previous record was held for over thirty years by another film set during World War II: The Longest Day (1962).

Steven Spielberg was shooting this movie at the same time he was approving the finishing touches on Jurassic Park (1993), such a gruelling thing to do. Robin Williams' 15 minute stand-up comedy phone calls, Adam Sandler's Red Hooded Sweatshirt sketch from SNL, and watching Seinfeld, helped Spielberg cheer up during filming. He also established the USC SHOAH foundation which comprises of testimonies from the Holocaust survivors who recall their personal experiences during that time.
