Chernobyl - Episode 1 - Full Length Reaction

I watched this show a few years ago and I totally forgot how fascinating this show is! I knew a little about the incident but still was able to learn a lot from this show. Can't wait to continue to see what your thoughts are on this series.

In China in 1990, I was part of a team of Americans and Canadians helping to startup a chemical plant (Chinese state-owned that had licensed my company's technology). For safety reasons, we delayed the startup multiple times. Ultimately, the Chinese plant manager overrode our delay despite our objections. At dinner, the Chinese plant manager told me he would be arrested for incompetency if the startup continued to be delayed. A similar context in the Soviet Union in 1986. That is why the managers at Chernobyl are focused on accountability and specifying who are at fault, just as much as understanding the science.

A common thing with reactors and this show is a lack of understanding of how different Soviet society was compared to ours. The State and Communist Party controlled everything about a citizens life from the size of your living quarters, to quality of food to how high you could rise in your job. Things you consider common knowledge that can be looked up in any library were considered State Secrets. The secret police (KGB) spied on everyone and other spies watched the spies. Talking to the wrong person could lead to anything from a demotion to disappearing entirely. Keep all this in mind while watching how these people responded to the crisis.

Chernobyl is a major historical event - as such I don't think you can really be spoiled on it. Any and all education you can get on it will be beneficial to you!

I avoid trailers as much as I'm able to because of that! I just watched one where they revealed the father plot point, I would've been so disappointed if I had seen that part before..!

Great reaction, Camilla. Don't worry about not knowing enough. I suggest you just let the show reveal. It will.

Nuclear power plants are a 24-hour operation. Workers don't sleep at the plant. Instead, they work in 12-hr shifts or 8-hr shifts. Don't worry about your questions. Most of us had many of the same questions. Don't worry about being unfamiliar with the Chernobyl event -- the event will be revealed (depicted) and explained in the series. Agree that you could spend a few minutes reading spoiler-free about (1) the effects of radiation on the human body and (2) what is a nuclear power plant (and how it works at a high level) -- without reading about Chernobyl. But both (1) and (2) will be discussed in the series. As for (1), you refer to a "chemical" but radiation is not a chemical attack -- instead radiation is considered a physical phenomenon, meaning it involves the release of energy in the form of radiation particles, not the introduction of a chemical substance like in a chemical attack.

Happy Saturday, Camilla. Let the Chernobyl journey begin.

Re: your intro thoughts on what constitutes a spoiler, I totally agree. I feel like even for gladiator 2, the trailer spoiled main plot points which made the movie less impactful (as I watched it for the first time along with your reaction yesterday.)
