Band of Brothers - Episode 6 - Full Length Reaction

Comments

The nurses in the episode are Renee Lemaire and Anna Chiwi. They were known as the Angels of Bastogne. Renee died in the air raid but Anna survived. The chocolate you see in this and other episodes was much more than just a chocolate bar. It was a calorie dense food packed with vitamins called ration bar D. It was standard issue and liberally supplied to the soldiers as a standard part of their rations. It had a bitter taste to discourage eating it quickly since one bar was designed to be eaten slowly over the course of a half hour or so. At this time in America chocolate disappeared from stores and along with sugar was severely rationed on the home front until about 1953.

My grandfather served in Patton's army during this battle and was hit by a tree burst a few days after Patton broke through the German encirclement and supplies were flowing to the 101st airborne again. He was hit in the face and chest by shrapnel and wood splinters. He fully recovered and was able to rejoin his unit in March for the final push into Germany.

thanks so much for sharing your reaction. also, thank you for treating these men with so much respect. i'm a Brit who served his country though only for a short while and i certainly never saw combat. my long and illustrious military career was halted pretty quick smart for medical reasons. although this series is about U.S. forces, i take a very much lotr perspective of military affairs. i see American, British and other allies as "men of the west" so to speak. as such, any man of the west who chooses to stand against tyranny and injustice will always have my undying respect and gratitude.

Thanks for reacting to this series. I could tell you were invested in this episode. I knew Cajuns growing up in SE Texas near the Louisiana border. I also lived in Louisiana a few years and became friends with several Cajuns, some from the heart of Lousiana Cajun country whose parents spoke broken English.
