Band of Brothers - Episode 5 - Full Length Reaction

Comments

Hi I recently joined your Patreon and I'm loving your reactions to BoB. I wanted to clarify for you the role of Lewis Nixon. He started in command of a platoon like Winters but was moved to a Staff Officer position during training. As an S-2 ( Intelligence Officer) he didn't command men in combat but was responsible for collecting and distributing information about the enemy forces in the area as well as available support and available local resources. That's why he always seems to know what's going on.

thank you as always!

Just to echo what others have said, Camilla: please don’t feel stupid or uninformed about terminology and details. The series is packed with info and jargon, and many of us learned so much about the show and Easy Company after first watching the series; and via reading Stephen Ambrose’s book about them, other books the men of Easy wrote themselves, and researching online and even from so many others via other reactions providing info. Just ask any questions you have and I’m sure those of us who have seen the show or may have served in the military (thank you to all who have) will eagerly help out. Also, Winters now is helping with planning and leading the battalion, so he won’t be leading men into firefights but instead has to manage the overall actions to ensure they complete their missions. And Nixon is an intelligence officer, so he is scouting for enemy locations and strength to help the 101st best plan their efforts; he also isn’t going to be right up front in battles in order to help with logistics and planning.

Dont feel stupid for not knowing what SS specifically was off the top of your head, I had to look it up aswell when I watched this for the frist time! (Maybe were just both stupid idk).

awesome reaction, as always. just a quick psa! if you were to think of bob as a video game, you have now completed the tutorial phase. i wont say anything other than don't forget your box of tissues for the rest of the series.

Tom Hanks directed this episode. I love the direction.

Great reaction! I'm sure there was no bacon on the front lines in WW2.

Great reaction. There is much info given in these episodes at a fast pace. You are not stupid. I found can pick up more and miss less (and be more at ease assimilating info) on a rewatch of the series. Agree that the scene of Winters on the Paris metro experiencing PTSD is powerful. Tom Hanks did do well directing this episode. The title "Crossroads" doesn't refer to this = but I think of this episode as the crossroads of the Allies invasion of continental Europe. In the battle, Winters/radioman Luz called in the US artillery rounds on the field. The Germans responded with artillery rounds (88 millimeter) that injured US troops including Private Webster (in the leg/foot) who shouted "they got me." The SS ("Schutzstaffel" meaning “protective echelon”), the black-uniformed elite corps and self-described “political soldiers” of the Nazi Party, were founded by Hitler in 1925 as a small personal bodyguard, but grew to much more than that, "having immense police and military powers, becoming virtually a state within a state." The "SS was headed by Heinrich Himmler, who built up the SS from fewer than 300 members to more than 50,000 by the time the Nazis came to power in 1933. Himmler, a racist fanatic, screened applicants for their supposed physical perfection and racial purity" and "recruited members from all ranks of German society."
