Props Questions!

for our January bonus video, I'm going to do a deep dive into the prop department and share some details on what exactly we do (if you're not aware, I work in the prop department)
if you have any specific questions about the prop department, being a prop buyer, working on set or with actors, leave them below!

Comments

Do the Actors have a say in what props they are going to use or are they just provided with a set of props, and they use what is in front of them?

Who decides what props are needed for a production and how do they decide exactly what to get? I would assume that there some key props are specifically called out in the story/script, but who figures out all of the other stuff that might be needed to fill out the scene? Is everything very specifically decided before production begins, or do you ever have to get additional props on the fly? In relation to filling out a scene, is there usually a clear delineation between sets and props? A filming set would presumably need to be filled with all kinds of everyday items to make it look like a believable space, is that the responsibility of the props department or the set designers? Is there overlap between the two? For productions like TV shows that may use some of the same props across multiple episodes or seasons, how do you keep track of what you have? Is there something like the Dewey Decimal system for prop storage? Haha! It seems like it would be a huge task to keep up with hundreds (or thousands?) of individual props. Do you ever hold on to props just in case they might be needed again? How do you know when it's safe to get rid of them? And what happens to used props once they're no longer needed? I'm looking forward to learning more about how the whole prop procurement process works! It's interesting to hear about all of the behind the scenes logistics that have to take place in order for us to see the final product.

What was the biggest prop that you ever bought for a production that you were involved in?

I am So Sorry but; OBSESSED: This new Conspiracy Theory that Blake Lively Caught Feelings and that is why all this drama happened. OK, Ok, Ok,…I didn’t believe it at first either; but these old interviews that show BL admitting that she can’t be an Emotional Shape Shifter, like other actors. (Meaning that she is always just playing herself.) And that the way she preps for a role is through the character's wardrobe, and probably obsessing over her character’s love interest. (Which her text messages show that she did do) This explains half of what happened, and why her ego was so bruised when JB asked about her weight. The other half can be explained by RR getting his own ego bruised, and wanting his own Pound of Flesh. This even explains why the Studio and JB gave her everything that she wanted. They were all just hoping that all those FEELINGS would just blow over; and they would all get paid. This would be Impossible to speculate on IF we didn’t have ALL there Messages and Interviews. And IDK; but the theory does fit the public evidence.

My favorite Prop is the red burn bag from the first Jason Bourne movie.

Specific questions would be what percentage of time is spent on each part of the job? General questions would be what is the best part of the job? What is the least enjoyable part? How did you get started in this work, is it similar to others and their start? Thanks!

I think most people think of all the cool things like weapons, ancient holy relics, or complex gadgets when they think of props. What are some of the more mundane things you've been responsible for?

Roby J

Do you prep the props?🤔

Mark D

I think you deserve all the props for all you do! Really big ones! Like on the Titanic!! 😁 .. oh wait.. not those kind.. um, ok.. What do you do with them after? Save them for other films, or sell them off?
