The Winter Solstice (Poem)

Just a little something to mark the winter solstice today and the changing of the seasons.

Before the fire we sit, marking the turning of the world,

at the point where the seasons change,

and the earth shifts again.

From the longest night, let forth spring the bounty of life!

From the longest night, let us sing into the dark,

even as the cold wraps around our bones.

Come close to the fire,

let it warm the tips of your fur, and give you life,

and lay your tail net to mine so it might stay warm behind us.

Tomorrow the day will be just a little longer,

but winter will not give up it’s blanket of snow so soon,

so huddle with me before the fire, and sing with me.

Sing of the summer, sing of the winter!

Sing to whatever makes you happy.

Tell me a story, of what dreams you have,

tell me your hopes, and I’ll tell you mine,

as we watch the fire dance,

for winter can’t last forever, but neither can summer.

So let us raise our voices tonight, here in the dark,

and find our strength for the snow and the cold to come,

and we will find our joy for the quiet months.
