Storms (Poem)

This is just something I wrote last month after Hurricane Helene..

I lay my ears back as the wind howls against me,

and the rain slashes into my pelt.

Gusts of winds come and go,

but the road forward remains—

the path to travel unchanged.

It is a long journey with only hints of sun,

and dark clouds always following—

a long road with only bits of safety,

with danger always present,

and great heights to fall from.

I should be the one doing the howling,

I should be the padding forward calmly,

surefooted with each step, not struggling to keep going

but the storms rarely let up, and when they do,

they soon return—leaving the road slippery and muddy.

Yet through the storm, the path still present,

even if the wind still howls and the still slashes

My ears are still back, yet here I am still walking,

one paw after the other down the road,

trying to reach the end of the path ahead of me.
