I read book 8 recently (my first re-read of these chapters since they were first posted), and I was really struck by this chapter. So many very old and mysterious threads come together here, all in service of something both simple and profound: Annie & Kat's friendship. And as you say in the video, it feels *earned* rather than deus ex machina (although given Skuld's modification of the controller, one could say it was literally a deus IN machina). It's a great chapter and a great culmination of that particular arc!

2021-11-21 03:58:49 +0000 UTCMy interpretation of the bird rooting itself into the cliffside was not to take that statement literally, but as an exaggeration on Ysengrin's part, since he would have more experience with natural things that do behave in that way, and wouldn't understand that a machine lacks this ability. We've never seen the cliffside since then (and thanks to Loup, aren't likely to) so I guess the true nature of his statement will remain a mystery. :P
