I expect the burning sensation is due to your body being used to eating to excess and regulating stomach acid production to match. When you stopped the supply, the stomach size diminished and the overproduced acid got pushed up to your throat instead, I imagine. It's likely a condition sometimes known as heartburn. I imagine fat people are quite familiar with it, as it also happens when overeating.

the body can synthesize most nutrients it needs from fat and substitute for some, but protein it cannot. Your body WILL take protein from other things, muscles... indiscriminately -- A study shows that your heart and your organs also will be cannibalized if you do not intake protein and certain other things. Please don't harm yourself needlessly.

sorry, Tom, removing my pledge to send a message to Patreon. If they don't roll back their changes, I will look at paypal

You could also look into liberapay, which has a 0% fee for creators, and only collects fees from subscribers on a "whenever you top up your balance" basis. You don't get to have 'subscriber-only benefits' but frankly I don't care about those at all, I only want to pay for the web comics that you are already giving away for free, to make sure that they can continue ...

See the "Support the Comic" button on the main GKC-page. You can donate via PayPal there, if I recall correctly.

Please take care, indeed. ...Now that Patreon wants a huge chunk of my tiny monthly contribution, what are my other giving options? I could give 12 times as much in January then quit. Or do you have a Paypal? Other?

We your patrons are a bit worried. We contribute, so you can turn your spiders into food and shelter and art, you know? Please take care β€οΈ

If you don' eat, not only will your muscles deteriorate, but in the end your brain will become used for energy too. it can cause irreversible brain damage. If you have been consuming fruit juices or such, I assume you were not in real danger, but I am fairly confident such severe fasting is not in any way healthy.

Um. No. Why would you do this?

I am truly curious as to what prompted this decision. Personally I am someone who forgets to eat, sometimes for a day or two. When I actively think to do it, it is much harder.

This... worries me. Not sure why you did this, but please be careful, not eating anything for such an extended period can have serious consequences.
I know those symptoms as I had them when I couldn't eat due to my throat cancer treatment - wouldn't wish it on enemies.
It is scary to suddenly find your body is feeble and you can't do things that used to be effortless.
I assume you did this for good reason and trust you will share your experience to good cause

This was a very bad idea. Please eat Tom. It's very important.

Also is usually tasty. If you're eating untasty food, eat different food. Or buy more spices. Or seek therapy because depression can rob you even of the joy of eating food because depression is a massive dickhole.

I know you don't usually reply directly to posts but I hope you can elaborate on your motivations for trying this. I imagine they must have been pretty strong. Was it something like an exercise in empathy for those who experience malnutrition? Curiousity?

Eat food! You'll jack up your metabolism and your body will start eating itself and your hair will fall out and you will literally die. WE LIKE YOU TOO MUCH DON'T DO THAT.

The loss in strength and endurance would be the result of your body cannibalizing parts of itself (muscle mass) to keep the whole thing going. You will need to push yourself and exercise to build up lost muscle mass and endurance.
Please do not do this again, Tom.

Yes, but a short fast is usually only a couple of days...two-ish weeks isn't healthy at all

I do little short term fasts sometimes and I think they really benefit me. They're not as scary as people tend to think-- but you do have to make sure you are still getting the nutrients your body needs. Any negative effects like that are a red flag. Plus everyone is different, some people need to eat regularly. Just listen to your body!

Dude, are you okay? I cut my caloric intake by ~60% (the need for breakfast is a lie and if you work a desk job you only need ~200 calories before dinner) and dropped 20% of my body mass. But, just, *not eating* for 2 weeks. That's a bit overboard.
Though it did yield some cool results in the atrophy department. Turns out your body can actually just eat itself which is cool

Please be careful, Tom! I spent some time malnourishing myself and I still have health problems related to it 20 years down the line. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Uh... Please be careful with your physical and mental health. You obviously have the right to do experiments with your body if you want, but this kind of thing is playing with fire... and I really hope you don't get badly burnt. :(

Very concerning comic. I hope since you're able to write about it that you've been able to reflect on it some? And maybe discuss the experience with someone in your life. Thank you for sharing this with us, though, whatever it meant to you--a curiosity or something else.
