Chapter 37: The Suits Wake Up

Morning at Orion Studios — 8:06 AM

The phones were already ringing when Jenna, the receptionist, pushed open the glass doors of Orion's Burbank office and immediately dropped her coffee.

It hit the tile like a grenade—scalding liquid splattering her white sneakers, the paper cup rolling away like it, too, had somewhere urgent to be.

"Dammit," she muttered, grabbing a wad of napkins from her tote bag. But the phones didn't care. Line One screamed. Line Two blared. Somewhere deeper in the building, a fax machine coughed out a page like a cat with bronchitis.

She hadn't even taken off her scarf.

It was 8:05.

By 8:12, Line Two was blinking like it had caught fire. Red. Pause. Red. Red. Hold. Transfer. Lost connection. Red again.

"Orion Studios, please hold—yes, I'll connect you—Orion Studios, press office—wait, who's calling? Orion, yes, it's true, but—can you repeat that name?"

Jenna's hand shook as she tried to juggle the landline, a notepad, and her shattered nerves. By 8:17, Line Three lit up and joined the chorus like it had been waiting its turn to explode.

She glanced at the call log.

Voicemail box full.

Callback queue: 49 and counting.

Subject: LEFT BEHIND — URGENT INQUIRY.

Subject: LEFT BEHIND — RIGHTS REQUEST.

Subject: LEFT BEHIND — ARE THE KIDS AVAILABLE FOR GMA?

She swore she saw the line blink in Morse code for help.

Someone from distribution stuck their head out of an office door, face pale, holding a fax with a hand-written number circled three times.

"They're asking for French subtitling rights by Friday. Friday. Do we even have a French translator?"

Someone else from PR raced past yelling, "Where's the press packet?! Where's the—"

Another voice answered, "We didn't make one. It wasn't even on the fall slate."

Phones. Voices. Fax paper on the floor like fallen leaves.

The whole lobby felt like a shaken snow globe where the snow was emails and panic.

Jenna finally sat down, the hem of her jeans damp, her bangs stuck to her forehead with stress sweat. She took one long breath and whispered to no one,

"I liked it better when no one watched our movies."

Line Four lit up.

She screamed internally, picked up the phone with fake calm, and said sweetly:

"Orion Studios, how may I direct your miracle today?"

Down the hall, Lou Martinez, a producer with two divorces and a disdain for youth, stood frozen in front of the lobby TV. He was still chewing a doughnut.

The screen showed Channel 7's coverage from last night: that couple — Nina and Eric — holding hands like the film had sewn them back together.

"That's the scarf, kid?" Lou muttered. "Jesus Christ."

9:03 AM — Emergency Boardroom Meeting

The boardroom filled with executives so fast you could smell three different brands of cologne fighting for dominance.

A dozen studio executives sat around a table shaped like a surfboard and priced like a Tesla. Some were in suits. Some are still in golf polos. All looked bewildered.

On the glass wall behind them, someone had written in red dry-erase marker:

LEFT BEHIND — STRATEGY?

An intern fumbled with a remote and finally got the TV on. The Channel 7 report from the night before played, showing crying audience members and a stunned teenage boy saying, "I want to call my mom from the first phone I see. I don't even know why."

A pause. Someone cleared their throat.

"This wasn't supposed to happen," said Carl Brenner, head of domestic distribution. "This was the little personal film with zero overhead. Remember? We called it a 'narrative tax write-off.'"

"Well," said a VP from acquisitions, "your tax write-off just pulled numbers bigger than two studio-backed dramas combined."

"$1.6 million, opening night," said another, scrolling through the weekend projections. "No lead actors. No traditional PR. No action, no violence. Just a kid in a scarf and a girl in red singing to ghosts."

"We had it in 43 theatres," someone else muttered. "That's barely wide."

A younger exec, maybe late twenties, finally spoke up. "It's not just the money. It's the feeling. Look at the exit polls. Ninety-one percent called it 'emotionally affecting.' That's unheard of. The audience isn't just watching. They're connecting."

There was a silence as this hung in the air.

The CEO, Alan Gold, rubbed his temples. "Double the screenings by Friday. I want it in New York, Chicago, and Toronto. Call AMC. Call Landmark. Hell, call Sundance. If they want to screen it, they better ask us."

Someone muttered, "I think India's already pirating it." Another added, "France called. They want festival rights. And Japan wants dub clearance."

"Call Legal," Alan said. "And someone please name this phenomenon before Variety does."

Elsewhere in the Industry...

10:06 AM – Veridian Pictures, Century City

Brenton Aldridge, SVP of Development at Veridian, stood in his corner office, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass and ego. His tie was askew, a trace of shaving cream still lingering under his chin. On the floor next to his polished desk sat an overflowing trash bin, and from it stuck the corner of a dog-eared screenplay: Left Behind — early draft, coffee-stained, marginal notes scribbled in red ink: "sweet but small" and "needs a real director."

Brenton didn't remember writing those notes, but he remembered passing.

And now he was watching a TV spot on Entertainment Tonight, where a sobbing couple talked about how the film reminded them of "our first apartment, before we had heat." The host called the movie "a generational flashpoint."

He picked up the screenplay, crumpled it tighter, and pitched it into the trash like it had insulted his dog.

"We passed on that?" he growled, turning to his assistant's empty chair.

His secretary, Leslie, stood awkwardly in the doorway with a manila folder and a peace-offering latte.

"Your assistant said it was too small," she offered quietly.

Brenton's jaw clenched. "Fire him."

"But—"

"Fire. Him."

He turned back to the screen, volume rising, where Zoey was now shown singing her lullaby — raw, warbling, honest. The camera panned to a theatre crowd where people wiped their eyes with their sleeves and movie stubs.

Brenton's hands dropped to his sides, slack. He muttered, "Jesus. They made Moonlight for twelve-year-olds."

Across town, a younger executive typed an email for her boss:

Find me the next Left Behind. I don't care if it's shot on a toaster by a toddler.

On a blog called CinePulse, a post had already gone viral:

Who needs 40-year-old screenwriters reliving prom stories when two actual children just changed cinema?

And in one corner office, untouched espresso trembling beside her mousepad, a woman stared at the film's title trending on Netscape, AOL, and even Yahoo Kids.

She whispered, "What just happened?"

Rishi's Journal — That Afternoon

He sat by the window in his office, sunlight flickering across the film posters on his wall.

He should have been elated. His phone was buzzing. Journalists, agents, producers. Some who once laughed at him. Some who said he'd ruined his career.

But instead, Rishi opened a soft leather notebook and wrote just one line:

Protect the centre. Don't let the noise get in.

Because he had seen this before. The feeding frenzy. The promises. The hands that only lift you to eventually hold you down.

He would shield them if it took everything in him.

At a Theatre in Portland...

A projectionist in his 60s leaned against the wall as a manager rushed past him with numbers.

"All sold out again," the kid said. "That's the fourth straight show."

"Yeah?" the projectionist said, brushing popcorn salt off his sleeve. "Extend it. I ain't taking this one down."

He looked through the porthole at a room full of strangers crying at the screen.

"Haven't seen this kind of reaction since Cinema Paradiso," he muttered.

In a Small Town in Wisconsin...

An elderly couple walked into a single-screen theatre. The woman had wanted to leave halfway through.

But by the final snowfall scene, she was clutching her husband's hand like they were twenty again.

When the lights came up, she didn't speak. She just smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder.

And he whispered, "I'm glad we came."

Meanwhile, at Orion Studios…

An intern held up a sleek envelope: Hasbro Entertainment. The subject line?

"Licensing Inquiry – Girl in Red / Dev's Snow Traps Line?"

Rishi stared at it for a beat and sighed. "The toys. Of course."

Another envelope was slid under his door minutes later—this one from the L.A. Times. The op-ed inside was titled:

"When Did a Film Last Make You Feel Something?"

"Left Behind reminds us why we go to the theatre—not for spectacle, but for surrender. In a time of noise, it whispers."

Final Scene — Same Boardroom, Now Quiet

The chairs were empty. Coffee cups cold.

Only one person remained: a young executive, no older than 29, sitting alone by the whiteboard.

She leaned back in her chair and spoke softly, as if someone had asked her a question:

"What if this isn't just a one-off?

What if we stop underestimating kids?

What if they just showed us what cinema could be?"
