The heavy wooden door loomed above her, its frame now impossibly high. Her oversized bathrobe, once snug, now hung off her shrunken frame, making it nearly impossible to move without tripping. With a resigned sigh, she let the robe fall to the ground, not wanting to risk slowing herself down.
"How did I get into this mess?" she thought, glancing down the darkened hallway. What started as a fun challenge—to stay one night in the spooky, abandoned apartments above the haunted doll factory and prove to everyone that this place was just an urban legend—had turned into a nightmare. She hadn’t believed the stories about the curse that shrinks anyone who screams. She used to think her cousin was talking nonsense when he swore that one time he peeked through the window and saw a sight so horrifying it made him shrink three inches. But here she was, barely half her original height, having seen sights so shocking that she had screamed eight or nine times already. Each shriek had cost her precious inches, the first when she saw the ghostly figure gliding down the hall, its hollow eyes staring right through her.
She covered her mouth with both hands, the urge to scream rising again as she remembered the ghost’s chilling whisper: “By morning, you’ll be no more than a doll.” Every creak and groan of the old building made her heart skip a beat. She had to make it until dawn, when the curse would supposedly lift and the doors would unlock. But that was hours away, and the ghosts seemed intent on driving her to another scream, another round of shrinking.
In the dim light, she saw a shadow move. Her breath caught in her throat as she recognized the ghostly figure gliding toward her. She pressed herself harder against the door, trying to become as small and invisible as possible. The ghost’s eyes locked onto hers, and she could feel the scream rising again. "No, no, no!" She bit down on her lip, hoping to stifle the sound. Her legs were shaking, her body trembling with fear and anticipation. She had to stay silent, had to survive until morning. The ghost floated closer, its cold presence chilling her to the bone. She closed her eyes, praying that she could endure just a few more hours.
