Jess was enjoying dinner with her boyfriend's parents for the first time, and things were going swimmingly! They seemed genuinely fond of her, dispelling the worries she had harbored all week about saying something awkward or making a bad impression. Tonight, she felt like she was acing it. That was until she felt that all-too-familiar tingle – the telltale sign of shrinking.
"No! Not now!" she thought. "They can't see me shrink!" She cursed her past self for making fun of a little person at a fortune teller booth during her college years. If only she hadn't mocked their size, she wouldn't be cursed to shrink and grow at random!
From her seat at the table, Jess could sense she was already smaller. Her feet no longer touched the floor. "May I be excused? I need to use the restroom," she blurted out, hoping to escape the impending humiliation.
"The little girls' room is down the hall and to the right," her boyfriend's father casually directed.
Jess winced at the irony of his statement and hurried off to the bathroom. Locking the door behind her, she tried to collect herself. "This can't be happening! Not now!" she exclaimed, feeling a panic attack looming. Suddenly, the shrinking sensation enveloped her again.
Smaller.
And smaller.
And smaller.
Jess found herself only half her original height. How on earth would she explain this sudden loss of stature? She sat on the edge of the oversized toilet in defeat. "If I can grow big, I promise I'll never make fun of anyone ever again..."
