January 2021 Update

Well hello there, fellow drinkers! Hopefully you all had fun over the festive season, much food and drink was consumed, and you're ready to take on 2021. Let's be honest, it can't be much worse than last year.

Anyway, it's been a while since I've posted an update, so I wanted to bring you up to speed on what I've been doing, and what to look forward to in the weeks ahead.

In the absence of any new movie releases, I've found myself turning to TV more and more, and there's been some real gems to watch. Cobra Kai season 3 is everything I hoped it would be, and more. A show that pays respect to its legacy and makes sparing use of nostalgia without shamelessly exploiting it, and even manages to poke fun at the ludicrous nature of modern PC culture. It's great fun, and I look forward to reviewing it.

Likewise The Expanse, a show that people have been asking me to review pretty much since my channel took off. Only in the past month or so did I finally get around to watching it, and I have to say it totally lived up to the hype. A smart, mature, grounded and believable sci-fi show with great characters and performances, that I can't wait to do a Drinker Recommends for.

I also want to talk some more about the writing elements that make films tick, and how they're completely lacking in modern movies. People really seemed to respond to my video about why we need heroes, but there's so much more to say. Broadly speaking, I'd like to cover:

1. Why we need villains

2. Why continuity matters

3. What films can teach us

4. Diversity done right

Obviously there will be the usual reviews of films (old and new), a few more Production Hell instalments (always good for a laugh), and hopefully a Drinker Fixes Game of Thrones at some point (that's likely to be a big one!). It seems like people have been enjoying the livestreams, so after taking a couple of weeks off over the holidays, I'll be getting back into that on a weekly basis too.

Oh, and for people that have been following my writing career, you might be interested in what I'm doing next. I've got a new novel in the works, titled DARK HARVEST, which ironically enough deals with a global pandemic (and I promise, I actually started it long before the Unspecified Virus of Unknown Origin was ever a thing). If you're interested in how it's shaping up, I've attached the prologue and first chapter as a little taster for what you can expect.

As always, I'm available if you want to message me with questions or feedback, and I try to respond to every message so don't be shy.

Anyway, that's all I've got for today. Go away now!

I just published a short story on Amazon The Golden Staircase: A Dog's Perspective. It's free until the 5th.

I hope you can get back! I'm 46% Scottish (per dna analysis) myself, which makes that my largest %, but have never been to the country. I really hope to get there soon and meet some of my extended family :)
