Male Gouache Portrait

Gouache's definitely different than graphite, though, for a first painting, the results are adequate; I believe my brushwork and edges will gradually improve as I familiarized with new medium.
I've started to question if studies akin to this will directly help me become an impressive fantasy realist artist when, thus far, they haven't consistently translated to illustrations or original designs...I need to genuinely shift my attention and reduce these technical works from a top priority to an occasional, convenient exercise, however, I oft return to them since I can, relatively, easily generate successful pieces...I wish I felt the same about my story-based/creature art...perhaps, now, academia's but another source of procrastination...if my skills aren't properly applied, I'll never be truly satisfied...
