Imo, Jordan Peele is simply phenomenal as a writer/director. I always find his themes to be so well layered (especially here: spectacles and profiting from trauma), and I appreciate that he never holds the audiences' hands when telling a story.
Regarding Jupe, however, his flashback scenes with Gordy show that he may have thought he had a special bond with the chimp, hence why Gordy didn't attack him. This experience followed him well into adulthood, and because so, he feels as if he has a special bond with the alien as well. Unfortunately, the reality is that he never had a special bond with either of these creatures. Jupe survived the chimp attack by pure chance, and he was simply lucky until he wasn't with the alien attack.

I saw this twice in the theater! So glad you liked it. Jordan Peele was definitely trying to do something different than a standard "horror movie"
