I agree, Landry killing that guy (and both he and Tyra dumping the body) didn't feel very 'Friday Night Lights' to me. I thought the show had jumped the shark when I first watched that, but it does thankfully get back on track. I am glad that would-be rapist is dead, though! Also, I really wish we had been able to see the slow disintegration of Julie and Matt's relationship. Because I think Julie's reasoning is really understandable and realistic, but because it appeared to come out of nowhere (because of the 8 month time-skip), I don't think it worked as well and may have caused viewers at the time to lose sympathy for her. Which sucks, because she's a sweet girl who is just confused and doesn't really know what she's doing or how to end things with Matt. She didn't even seem to feel like she was even allowed to end things with Matt, for any reason, at any time. So it sucks that her motivations and feelings weren't explored in more depth over more time.

The Landry killing a guy was not a good plot decision, though they’re making the best of it. As for everything else being off kilter, I think it was a heavy-handed way of impressing on us that it was a bad idea for Coach Taylor to leave Dillon for that college job. EVERYBODY is adrift and for each one of them it’s partly because of Coach Taylor being absent. Even Buddy’s mess is largely because Coach isn’t there to guide him and channel his more extreme reactions to things ... plus the fact that the new coach has already decided to freeze Buddy out. So the message is clear ... Dillon needs Coach Taylor back!
