Dragonball Super went for as much comedy as the original dragonball had, and dragonball Z kind of lacked. So it's sliiiiihghtly more serious than abridged.

In one episode he and another denizen of Heaven had to fight against Frieza, King Cold, Cell and the Ginyu Force minus the Captain. Goku took on the Ginyu Force and the other took on the others and beat them with ease and locked them in a cell in HFIL. The Otherworld Tournament mentioned on the news actually happened in the anime (both parts were filler only arcs) with Goku the winner it was also when the met the boss of all the Kais the Grand Kai.
