You would not be prohibited from doing any job in Europe as a woman except jobs you physically couldn't do, like "Here's a 15 ton stone block. Carry to the other side of town in 2 hours" There were women in the rolls of every merchant guild, every craftsman's guild, and every institute of learning all the way back to at least Sumer. Just why would you? Why spent 10 years going to school, 4 years going to college, then 8 years in med school and residency, so that in your 40's you can start your career, when you could just blow that guy who did it, and get everything he has immediately? Basically only lesbians, (who also need money to spend on women) and old widows who don't want to get remarried got jobs, no one else had to. for example, Marie Curie went to college and med school, then was made a professor at an ivy league college in the 1830-50's. No one tried to stop her. (except her husband, who was right, because it did kill her) Now if you were in the middle east, North Africa, or Spain when they were controlled by Islam, well that's another story.
