The Best Fashion Movies (That Aren't About Fashion)

Quick video for you all that won't be coming out publicly. With all the exclusive projects like the wardrobe tour and all the extended interviews, we haven't gotten to do a proper patreon exclusive episode in a while :)

We're already abroad working on a massive upcoming project. Very excited to share when the time is right.

Tell us what movies we missed!

Oh Bliss….don’t be shy. We love you and would never Deny your choices.

Oh YES THAT JACKET. In ‘Drive’ And he Wore it as a king of Gods, a modern king of the zodiac I just adorned.!

Patricia Todd

First saw 2001 about 1979, I could not find a man's suit like those worn by execs in the space station scenes....I was obsessed. :)

John Ellis

2001 Space Odyssey Costumes: Hardy Aimes

John Ellis

I want more men content too! Your want for men’s lines inspired me to make something for dudes in the cottagecore (cringe I know sorry) sphere

Laura

My favourite movies of this kind would probably be 'Ritual' by Hideaki Anno and also 'On the silver globe' by Żuławki. They're so mesmerising that I literally wanted to cry while watching them

Aleksandra Pyska

The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover has to be the ultimate one for me. nothing will ever top those costumes with those sets

Jonathan Richter

rosemary's nightgown...

There has been a few films that I always remember what got me to be in love with fashion and it one that stands alone was the fifth element. Every costume was immaculately done by JPG and is a great example of retro futurism.

Gregory Duverseau

The outfits that were worn by Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny. Nothing too crazy, but they were vital to her character.

Kelly

They're difficult to find because the (thoroughly remarkable) artist and his gallery (Barbara Gladstone) very tightly control the films' distribution and availability, but the Cremaster Cycle (a suite of five films) by Matthew Barney are extraordinarily novel, inventive, visually dazzling and narratively rich works that, in addition to their complex conceptual content, are a marvel to behold (costumes, prosthetics, gear, sculptural objects, etc.).

Rodger Stevens

Lost in Translation

French Melk

there’s a shirt in Blackbord Jungle that reminds me of the margiela pendleton cutout shirts. it’s an insane shirt. movies are cool.

Luke Kennedy

Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Great movie, amazing visuals and the clothes are stunning......love the shoe hats.

Dean Valibhai

The opening funeral scene of Black Panther Wakanda Forever is always something that I recall because the white costumes were impeccable and excellently filmed

I daro

See this movie - it's great! Mon Oncle, a French film directed by Jacques Tati c. 1958

Christine Kiebert-Boss

frieren!

Lorenzo Scialanga

Not what I would call a great movie, but the costume design in The Cell by Eiko Ishioka and April Napier lives in my head rent free

David Neal

the aviator jacket leonardo di caprio is wearing in 'the aviator' .. dont know why, its just stuck in my head

Vojin Krajnovic

Yeah, but its just made good. For example in Breaking Bad it goes the same way, but characters are also much more different between them

tsuki

Ok but drop the nail color name! 🥹

Georgia Brito Sales

I feel like Clueless is a big touchstone for me

Park

I recently watched a season of Rhythm and Flow on Netflix. It was interesting to see the influence Gomorrah had on Italian hip hop culture

Park

Orlando with Tilda swinton

Alice

Edward scissor hands. I only have childhood memories of the film but it was always a costume design that stuck with me.

Cameron Lang

**hot take** The Office has some of the best TV costumes I've ever seen. Justification: If the goals of costume are to reflect the setting and personality of the characters, The Office achieves that perfectly. Although they all wear "boring" office clothes, there are small nuances in the style of clothes that reflect the character's ages and personalities. e.g. - Andy wears a style of necktie particular to Ivy League colleges, since he attended one. - Dwight wears short sleeve off-white oxford collar shirts that date to when he was younger. - Michael wears a tie pattern popular in the 90's but becoming dated by the time of the show, mimicking his central conflict of maintaining relevance. - Jim wears a more "modern" shirt and tie but never buttons the top button, showing his relaxed attitude. Basically the costume director perfectly takes advantage of these nuances in officewear trends to develop the characters. Source: I sold menswear to office workers for years and the characters remind me of my customers– they wear what I would have sold them.

Speaking of Thom Browne. If you’re ever looking for video ideas, I would love to see a breakdown of his recent Edgar Allen Poe themed show similar to your train station video. You’re the best :D

wy4tt

Sharon stone in the opening scenes of Casino. Specifically the Couregges vinyl jacket and mini skirt.

Susan Galvin

Which were inspired from art deco and specifically Alphonse Mucha

Mark De Los Santos

Clamp loves its costume design! I think about Yuko Ichihara's dresses from xxxHolic like every other week lol

Mark De Los Santos

Feyd Rautha in Dune pt2, specifically the gladiator scene… very recent but has been on my mind a lot

Walter Naranjo

Responding to your take on "A single man", you should absolutely watch "99 francs". It's a french movie that probably didn't get much exposure internationally made by Frederic Beigbeder, a former art director in advertising. It combines a striking reflexion on consumerism with a visual way of storytelling that comes from his background of directing commercials. Really worth your time!

FX Daussy

This vid and the comments are a goldmine, thanks so much Bliss & Co!

AR

Crimson Peak, Velvet Goldmine, and Valerie and her Week of Wonders are the first movies i think of, but I also feel a need to mention Witch Hat Atelier even though it's a manga because of how carefully designed and beautifully drawn the clothing is (the main character is also the daughter of a tailor and that influences how she uses magic sometimes). Mello's entire wardrobe in Death Note, Subaru's hat/glove/jacket combinations in Tokyo Babylon, and Pine's suspenders in ch. 11 of Otherworld Barbara (also all manga, whoops ^^;) are some specific "costume" elements that come to mind.

Adrian Freund

The red and black beaded dress that Kate Winslet wore in Titanic, I was obsessed with it and still think about it often. Also the TV series Scream Queens had such an excellent stylist and I love referencing it.

Caitlin Morgan

Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals and Wang Kar-Wai's In the Mood For Love are visual masterpieces. A piece from a movie I think about often is Chris Evans' cable knit sweater in Knives Out

Luke

I did a whole project on costumes from “the American friend” by Wim Wenders, I’m not exactly sure why I’m so in love with them but god damn!

Morgasm

Ryan Goslings jacket in Drive, Penny Lanes fur coat in Almost Famous, and Forrest's red hat in Forrest Gump.

Ninotchka, 1939. Ninotchka (Greta Garbo) is a no-nonsense Communist sent from Moscow to Paris to complete the sale of jewels confiscated from Russian nobles during the revolution. Ninotchka is utterly utilitarian until she is seduced by the sensuousness of Paris, the beauty and whimsy of fashion (that hat!), and the charms of Count Léon d'Algout (Melvyn Douglas). Ninotchka commenting on Western decadence – (looking at a ladies’ hat in a Paris display window) -- How can such a civilization survive which permits their women to put things like that on their heads? It won’t be long now, comrades. And it wasn't long before Ninotchka/Garbo is wearing one of the oddest hats (it looks like a pixie's hut) I've seen in a 1930s film -- and that's saying something. The costume designer for the film was Adrian.

Susan Sheldon

Tommy: The Movie. 1975 "Your Senses Will Never Be the Same" Ken Russell directed, and it's so over-ripe you can nearly smell it.

Susan Sheldon

Bram Stoker's Dracula, 1992, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, costumes designed by Eiko Ishioka; cannot get over Lucy's , (played by Sadie Frost), wedding costume.

anna haddal

Being John Malkovich, 1999 Director Spike Jonze

Paige Beltowski

Not a movie but I love jojos bizarre adventure clothes, I mean who doesn’t.

Alex

Helmut Newton shot photos for the prop portfolio that plays a big role in Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) in which a fashion photographer develops the ability to see through the eyes of a serial killer.

Montana Brock

Velvet Goldmine (1998) was probably the first film to make me think about clothing as a personal expression, and I don't think it's a hard argument to say it inspired many fashion films/editorials. Especially the opening scene!

Montana Brock

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) This movie is as beautiful as it is dark thanks to the costume design done by Jean-Paul Gaultier. I also can't help but imagine the blonde, spiky-haired dishwashing orphan in the film is a humorous reference to Gaultier.

Montana Brock

planet of the apes. the original ones. i love love love the costumes that the apes are wearing. so formal and futuristic. side note - Armando in “Conquest of the POTA” had a really nice fit consisting of a sort of denim blazer over a turtle neck. great movies

Rasmus Apríl

Anck-su-namun's bodypainted dress from The Mummy.

Bukfenc

Daisies (1966) for similar reasons to The Colour of Pomegranates. Farewell My Concubine (1992) for amazing historical costuming. In the Mood for Love (2000) for Maggie Cheung's Cheongsams and Tony Leung's tie collection, and frankly I am endlessly obsessed with Juliette Binoche's wardrobe in Three Colours: Blue (1993)

Vesper MacKenzie

MUBI is a great streaming service for watching curated foreign and art films.

Gary Kanter

Sissi with Romy Schneider. If you love princess gowns galore, THIS IS IT!!!!!

Josee Malette

I couldn't recommend 'Valerie and Her Week of Wonders' (1970) enough. It's a Czechoslovakian surrealist coming of age horror movie about the bizarre dream of a young girl on her first night of menstruation, and in the process she discovers a world filled with witchcraft and vampires. The cinematograph stood out the most to me due to its extremely experimental nature, and the narrative and content is so unforgiving and raw. It was extremely controversial film then because this artistic expression was a direct response to the "Socialist realism" movement in the Soviet Union where by art and literature was made extremely literal, often showing the depiction of idealised USSR.

LethargicBunny

Just a few pieces I’ll always think about: Harrison Fords coat in Blade Runner, Vlads crazy long kimono in Bram Stokers Dracula, Mal’s boots in Firefly, Bruce Willis’s sick pants in Fifth Element

Joe Heffern

Awesome picks! Some other fav costume movies: Ticket of No Return Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant Days of Being Wild (and honestly most Wong Kar Wai films!) Wild At Heart (for the jacket) Lucifer Rising

Paul

For Fellini, I'll go for Roma and Giulietta degli Spiriti

Julia Elsey

Rear Window! The Blue Mark Cross handbag Grace Kelly wears is insane. Her outfits are also really great in that film.

Maya

I know I'm off the Fashion Map but PLEASE, let me know if y'all ever come to Rome, IT. Or even Milano 💜

Julia Elsey

Those nails are sick

Echo DeVore

Yes! A single Man is on my list of movies to watch. I started it but it is one of those that needed my undivided attention

Yisell Hernandez

Thanks for the list, Bliss. I'm going to suggest a few: Contempt--Godard; most Fellini, especially La Dolce Vita and Satyricon; Fassbinder, The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant; and Bertolucci's The Conformist.Short clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzHyXhTlT90.
