Fun fact! Vivziepop, the show’s creator, recently released a Spotify playlist for Lucifer🥰. Maybe it could be good to give it a listen after finishing the show to gain some insight into his character? I know I’m learning a ton!

Like, Lucifer says “this is the first time she has called you in years!” right? So I think he only reaches out when he feels like he can justify it because he doesn’t want to bother her, leading Charlie to think that he doesn’t want to see/talk to her, but seeing how he reacted after she invited him to the hotel this episode that clearly is not the case. I additionally suspect that lines like “you invite people in and offer them everything and they just invite violence and chaos to your doorstep. It doesn’t matter how well intentioned you are” and “I tried this all before” might be implying that Lucifer had gave redemption a shot at some point and it crashed spectacularly. That might be part of why he’s so worried for Charlie trying out the same venture

2025-06-05 20:21:46 +0000 UTCNO SPOILERS IN THIS WALL OF TEXT, I am speaking from how I interpreted Charlie and Lucifers relationship (and the song at the end of this episode) back when I FIRST saw this episode. Don't get me wrong, I like your take on this and it actually could be lazy or rushed writing. As the story at the start of Episode 1 says, Lucifer gave humans free will (with assumed good intentions), but got thrown out of heaven as thanks. He was never allowed to see the good of humanity, not on Earth and not in Heaven, so his only window into humanity (after only meeting the first three humans in existence) has been sinners showing up in hell. I think this started the depression Lucifer mentions in this episode and made him drawn back, not really engaging in Hell and its occupants more than necessary. Despite being king of hell, there doesn't seem to be any rules (which I guess is fitting in it being hell) so the ruler isn't really... ruling. In the flashback to when Charlie was small we see him talk about his dreams, but he's already clearly holed up in his room inventing things like that rubber duck. He has already somewhat withdrawn at this point. He passed on that spark of hope that we see in the flashback to Charlie, hoping (but not really believing) that things might change. Time went on, Charlie grew, for some reason 7 years ago Lilith disappeared which I'm sure compounded that depression and made Lucifer withdraw even more. My theory was that the gulf between them in Charlies eyes is that he's drawn back and never really "engaged" with her hopes and dreams, which we can see in how Lucifer reacts to the hotel and the idea. And in Lucifers eyes, he didn't want to encourage dangerous ideas and get Charlie to interact with and become a target for Heaven, which he was a part of and has had meetings with since then, which also massacres souls in Hell every year. Lucifer has THE first hand knowledge of how heaven views at least some ideas and dreams, and he's been putting up this shield to try to protect Charlie from the consequences it could bring. The talk before the ending song, and part of that song, looks to me like Lucifer is struggling with not wanting Charlie to become him, but also wanting her to be better than him. I believe that Charlie might be the first truly good person Lucifer has interacted with in ages (disregarding Lilith who we know very little about at this point), and her arguments during the song and her will to protect her people reminds Lucifer of the good side of free will, which he has been sentenced not to get to see with the sinners. And this is what finally gets through to him when the song switches up and they align. In the song, the whole "I've been dying to find out who you are" from Lucifers perspective is about finally giving up on protecting Charlie from dreaming and seeing if she will succeed where he failed. And from Charlies perspective, it's about breaking through the depression and getting to know her dad as he was when he wasn't jaded and broken. Now I'm gonna admit, this is just my take and I may be projecting some history with depression and withdrawing as a result on the situation. Great reactions, I'm looking forward to the rest!
