He lost his mother, someone he cared dearly about, and his father left him in the dust. So in my mind that always came from more of a hurt “I won’t be left again” and “you can’t replace them” or like buried bitterness emotion in connection with “son”. I could be WAY off course (I’m not nearly as good as analyzing as you are) but that’s where my head always went during this scene. Anyway back to the reaction 😂😂 (Sorry for commenting so much throughout!)
