BONUS - Fantasy Author Reacts to Book of Mormon Pt 1

Hello! As I mentioned in my last post, here is a video I was saving for a rainy day. This is NOT going to be a recurring series quite yet (maybe a month or so away from that) but as an apology for messing up the upload schedule of Hamilton here on Patreon for my $5 patrons, I wanted to share this early. The rest of Book of Mormon will probably start being posted and seeing youtube after I get to Hadestown, which will be after Hamilton.

This was a really interesting analysis/reaction for me to do! As a fantasy author who has learned a lot from Trey Parker and Matt Stone (such as their "But, Therefore, and then" rule for narrative momentum) AND a person who was a fully involved member of the Mormon church for 25 years, I had a lot to say.

It was so cool seeing the cultural elements represented and how that interesected with the story. It is important to me we keep the conversation respectful around this, but I hope I provided some insights from both culture and storytelling.

I'm very interested in seeing your reaction to the rest of this show. I adore it, crass as it may be at some points, but I really enjoy the heart of the story. I've always figured it can't be too terribly offensive given that every time I've seen this live (more than 5 times on two different continents) every Playbill has included advertisement from the Church themselves. The first time I saw it I had minimal understanding of Mormons. After I saw it I went down a rabbit hole of learning about the religion, the culture, etc and gained a whole new appreciation for this show. On first viewing I definitely thought Elder Price was an asshole, he's definitely a more sympathetic character after learning more about where he's likely coming from with the better knowledge.

Missionaries diets seem to switch between ramen noodles at home and 12-course meals with members and investigators, haha! 😂 Thanks for sharing!

Living in Australia, most of our nieces and nephews served/are serving here, New Zealand, Thailand, Tahiti and Philippines. Our kids didn’t want to go and we didn’t push. We loved having the missionaries over for dinner as we put on a massive spread in case it was the only decent meal they had that week.
