Fantasy Author Reacts to Hamilton Pt 5.

Oh goodness, I was just sitting down to write because that is so relatable! I also had at one point lost nearly 100 lbs but due to medication I take to manage my bipolar it all came flooding back. That's such a hard but relatable feeling. I've been trying to get better at appreciating where I am. Best of luck in your jourey and your work. Thanks for the support!

9:45 this is something I REALLY relate to if I interpreted this correctly. “I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory.” For me, it’s part of why I published my work. It’s the immortality that legacy brings. Yes, I’m proud of my work, immensely, but I also want to know I’m leaving something behind. I’m not saying my mafia romance is profound prose that’ll change lives, but it was my story to tell and I did that. And maybe someone somewhere will relate to something I put out there and it’ll brighten a moment. And I think that’s what Hamilton wanted, but on such a grander scale. And that feeling leads to such a constant state of “is this enough to make my mark? Have I done it yet? And never being, well, satisfied with where you are. I struggle with body dysmorphia, and at one time I had lost almost 100 pounds, and a medication caused it all to come back. And now I look at old pictures of when I had lost it and I realized how I never appreciated where I was or what I had done, because I still felt like it wasn’t enough in those moments. And I feel like it’s the same with legacy. But unfortunately, most will never really know if we did it, because once it goes from “goals of legacy” to “actual legacy”, you’re not here to see it. Okay, rant over lol.

im a little late but you mentioned the relationship between john laurens and hamilton and i wanted to provide more historical context because i was super hyperfixated about this in middle school and i think youre right when you say john's death is what causes hamilton to spiral directly. so hamilton and lauren's letters to each other during the war are the basis for a lot of the speculation that they were engaged in a romantic/sexual relationship of some sort. Many of these letters include Hamilton pretty blatantly making allusions to them having sex. he states in one letter that laurens could help him win over girls because he knows from experiance how big his ,,yaknow,,, is. In a letter he writes to laurens after hamilton gets married to eliza he invites laurens to a threesome, i am not kidding. some of my favorite lines from hamiltons letters to laurens include: "Cold in my professions, warm in [my] friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it m[ight] be in my power, by action rather than words, [to] convince you that I love you" "I have written you five or six letters since you left Philadelphia and I should have written you more had you made proper return. But like a jealous lover, when I thought you slighted my caresses, my affection was alarmed and my vanity piqued. I had almost resolved to lavish no more of them upon you and to reject you as an inconstant and an ungrateful" - here hes essentially saying that laurens needs to write to him more because he gets jealous :( "I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now." -here hes saying that getting married would not make him any less devoted to laurens. Hamilton's last letter to Laurens was signed "yours forever, A. Hamilton" those are just a couple examples but i think the most damning evidence is that Hamilton's descendants who collected and published most of his writings, instead censored and destroyed many of hamilton's letters to laurens out of fear it would mar his reputation. one last note is that hamilton, when john laurens died, he never wrote about his death. He made passing mention of it in a letter to Nathanial Greene. But i think its telling that the man who could not stop writing his every thought somehow had no words to describe his grief for laurens. this is all he wrote: "I feel the deepest affliction at the news we have just received of the loss of our dear and ⟨inesti⟩mable friend Laurens. His career of virtue is at an end. How strangely are human affairs conducted, that so many excellent qualities could not ensure a more happy fate? The world will feel the loss of a man who has left few like him behind, and America of a citizen whose heart realized that patriotism of which others only talk. I feel the loss of a friend I truly and most tenderly loved, and one of a very small number." Hamilton only shut down like this emotionally at one other death, that of one of his children , in which he did not write about his child's passing for months before writing letters to inform others about the passing. I think this shows how devastating john Lauren's passing was to him, and by all accounts he never formed a relationship that close with anyone else. Weather Laurens and Hamilton were romantically involved is still up for debate but to me its pretty clear that there were at least deep feelings of romantic inclinations for one another. theres videos and articles that go much deeper into the story of hamilton and laurens than what i was able to here but i hope this is interesting context for you!

LEGALLY BLONDE MUSICAL REFERENCE

It’s nice to have new outlets for my obsessions. 😜

Im learning so much!! These are amazing insights!

When Lin was quite young, a close friend of his died. He has talked about how that experience helped him identify with Hamilton. Lin’s first musical “In the Heights” was staged in 2005. He was 25. It debuted on Broadway in 2008. It won two Tony Awards, Best Musical and Best Original Score. The cast album won a Grammy Award. It took him 6 years to complete, but Hamilton debuted in 2015. Lin was 35. That year, he won the MacArthur Genius Grant. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He won the Tony award for Best Book, and Hamilton won 10 other Tonys that year. The Hamilton cast recording topped Billboard's Rap Albums chart for over 2 months. It was one of the biggest selling albums of the 2010s. Since then, Lin was the composer and lyricist on the animated films: Moana, Encanto and Mufasa. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” topped the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. As well as producing the film version of “In the Heights”. He directed the film version of Tick, Tick, Boom. Last year, a concept album was released, that Lin co-wrote with Eisa Davis. It a gender flipped gang story, inspired by the action film The Warriors. Hamilton wasn’t the only one writing like he’s running out of time. Thanks for taking us along on your Hamilton journey.

This story is Hamilton’s life. Artistic license was taken, but these are the events of his life. Some lines are here not because they were crafted in service of this musical, but because they are from actual letters, speeches or other writing by the real people at that time.

Ms. Chuck Terry

Oh man, I just couldn't wait for the next YouTube upload and just had to become a Patron. And yes, I did catch that Legally Blonde reference! Even better, that was a reference to the musical and not the movie! They changed that line for the show because they had learned that what Elle said in the movie wasn't actually correct. Also, I know you must get tired of people asking you to react to stuff when you're still in the middle of something, but... Man. Hadestown. You *have* to react to Hadestown. It may not bring in Epic numbers (even though it is very beloved and has won a ton of awards), but it's so stupidly good and such a different take on adapting a story from Greek mythology. I've been a huge fan from back when it was just an obscure concept album, and I think you would get a real kick out of the way it does world-building and character motivation.

Yara Kaas

burr talking about how he'll make a million mistakes seems significant since his whole thing is that he'd rather do nothing than risk making a mistake, so him being willing to break from that for his daughter is pretty big

Griffin Backes

"It's Burr! He's my favorite." Lee: "😐"

Kirru

when i was watching on youtube this is what drove me absolutely wild not spoiling that you called it but being impressed by the immediate read

Alex

Congratulations on the book progress!! I’m so excited to see what you think of what happens next, thank you for continuing to deliver on very well-thought out analysis

Jonathan Fogler

So glad someone got it!

Jacob Penrod

YOU JUST BLEW MY MIND AHHHHHHH I can't believe that!

Jacob Penrod

You also called John’s death in “My Shot”. Burr said “fools who run their mouths wind up dead”. You said “the next person who talks is a deadman”, who was John Laurens. And you were right! Unfortunately, very sad moment but it was such a good prediction 😅

Lauren R

nice legally blonde reference lol

Hey, I absolutely love your analysis! I literally get so impressed with each video, looking forward to the next one. Really cool that you clocked Hamilton spiraling in Non-Stop that is something that often gets dismissed. Though want to say that I always saw Act I Burr less as a cat that's ready to pounce and more like the one that is afraid to get hit if it does so. Like its hungry, the prey is right in front of it, but it is too risky to take it, and then Hamilton snatches it right before his nose. But also, Hamilton does come and offer to get it together but is getting impatient, something I noticed watching your video is that, unlike all the previous times, in Non-Stop, Hamilton is actually angry/annoyed at Burr for refusing to help him. Love your take on Eliza and Alexander's relationship because it is so interesting. I still think there is love on both sides, and he does love her, but just not enough to calm down. However, I do not like looking at it too cynically because it is away from the complexity of it all, making Hamilton seem one-sided. Anyway, sorry if it got too long I got a bit excited after watching the video, as mentioned, I like it a lot! Also, good luck with finishing the book, it sounds really interesting and like something I would love to read once it comes out

Polina

I get chills every time nonstop plays. Like every song coming together it's just perfect!

Stefanie

aww i didn’t want this to be spoiled

𐔌 liah 𐦯

Non-stop is definitely my favorite song from Hamilton. It almost feels like a villain origin song lol

Ren (Cora Z)

So neat history. At the constitutional convention (Held because the Articles of Confederation were nowhere near enough governance), Hamilton proposes the President as a lifetime appointee same as the Supreme Court is today. This led to all of Hamilton’s enemies calling him a Monarchist, though I’m pretty sure he only did so due to Washington being the only consideration for President. While it absolutely is foreshadowing, “every proclamation guarantees free ammunition for your enemies” is also a nod to that fact. “Non-Stop” fights for my number 1 song spot in Hamilton, it’s such a good song where you see everything come together like you mentioned

Ashwath Raghuram

Some actors play different characters in act 2. John Laurens’ actor plays Hamilton’s son, Phillip. Lafayette’s actor play Thomas Jefferson. Peggy’s actress plays Mariah Reynolds. Hercules Mulligan’s actor plays James Madison. That’s all I can remember right now but I’m sure theres more lol

sariyah johnson

So bit of history here. So the name Rochambeau was the name of a French general who assisted in the revolutionary war. And was key in the victory at Yorktown as France and America were directly allied in the conflict.

River

17:15 “we won the war what does that matter if we’re not going to do anything about it” I SWEAR you have predictive abilities that’s like word for word Hamilton in Nonstop 😭
