The Fall of the House of Usher | Ep. 3

so interesting, I FAR preferred this to midnight mass. Flanagan’s monologue-style feels much less awkwardly placed in here than MM, and I think fits the form of this show better, as many of the episodic narratives are already drawn from poetry and lyrical prose. Also it’s just got that polemical tone, vengeance for the poor/ revenge against the ultra rich thing going for it - evil characters suffering, rather than good characters sacrificing like in MM- so i think it just gets you more hype for the story to play out.

This is probably my least favorite of the 4 flaniverse shows despite still being really good. The more episodic nature of it just doesn't work as well as Midnight Mass or Hill House. Hopefully you check out Bly next with a stockpile of tissues!

I'm loving rewatching this show and really enjoying y'alls reactions! Just in case you didn't know, each episode (or each Usher death) is based on one of Poe's short stories. And most of the names of the characters (especially the old-timey names of the Usher kids) are taken from Poe's writings or people from his personal life.

Ooooo, storm Amy is just rolling in and I love this series during stormy season.

The Lemon Monologue is amazing! I was so excited to see this drop today! Yay! 🥰

That lemon monologue was..... CRAZY! First time seeing it, my mouth grew more and more open as he went a long. Then, when he finally finishes, it was this awkward mix of laughter and amazement. 🍋🤣🫢🍋

The lemon monologue is literally the best monologue in all of television history in my opinion. Spells out the entire capitalist plan, just look at diamonds it’s exactly how he described. Fucking CINEMA. Gives me anti-capitalist whimsy chills every time

Love this episode because even though it's very Camille-centric, you really do get the sort of beginning of the next few siblings stories! Carla is so amazing, I of course also loved her as the hot mom from spy kids, the lovely but sort of crazy mom in Hill House, and now this! Immensely enjoying watching this with you guys!

Some info on Poe’s original work, for anyone interested. C. Auguste Dupin, the assistant US Attorney who Roderick begins confessing to in episode 1, is actually the name of the detective in Poe’s 1841 short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue which this episode takes it’s title and tenuous inspiration from. Poe’s story is widely considered to be the first modern detective story, the first “Locked Room” mystery, and the character of Dupin could be said to be a forerunner to Sherlock Holmes, and Hercule Poirot among others. In Poe’s tale, although not a professional detective, Dupin solves a brutal double murder case that has baffled the police in Paris. The culprit who killed two women, who were found dead in the fictional street of Rue Morgue, turns out to be an orangutan that has escaped from an abusive owner, a sailor, who captured the orangutan in Borneo and bought him back with him to Paris. The Murders in the Rue Morgue is probably Poe’s most well known work, aside from The Raven.🐦‍⬛
