I'm so enjoying your reaction to MM. But I disagree w/you guys on one thing. Riley didn't say "Father Paul can't be trusted." He said, "One fact I know is that Father Paul lied to me today." You forget that Riley doesn't trust religion or priests. And he just had a real connection with Joe who told him his sister had died & how that had affected him. Riley has a natural distrust of religion & he's not sold on Father Paul yet & is why he challenges him all the time. That's my take on it.

I’m FINALLY catching up on y’all’s MM reactions after a break, and man…this episode still hits you right in the throat multiple times. Also yes 100% re: MM needing more room to breathe in certain places because the entire show is just an embarrassment of riches. There’s no filler, no time to catch your breath etc. which in some ways is amazing because the quality is just so high, but at the same time it can be difficult to fully appreciate said quality because you just don’t have the time to sit with each masterpiece of a scene. Also, I love that you guys recognized Sam Sloyan’s hold-my-beer moment when she goes toe to toe with Linklater acting-chops-wise in that “DO NOT CHERRY PICK THE GLORIES OF GOD!!” scene.

Why on earth would Joe lie about his own sister being dead?

I went to a catholic school when I was growing up and every Tuesday at the end of the day we would have mass I always hated Tuesdays for that reasoning. It’s really funny you guys release this show on Tuesdays. Very ironic lol

I do think you guys' format makes you notice the pacing more, since you need a bit of space to talk and react to what's going on. As a viewer, I had no issue with the pacing, I just stayed hooked through every scene transition lol. Please feel free to pause and discuss when you need to, we love to hear your thoughts!

Although Arcane is what tipped me over the edge and made me get the sub, I probably wouldn't have gotten to that edge in the first place if not for this show and Severance, two of my favorite shows ever. This is such an amazing dissection of faith and religion, from so many angles, I wish I could share it with christian friends and discuss (but the content is a bit too disturbing, especially from this point on).

Hugs to y’all. 💜 religious or not, any human would be moved by Erin’s monologue

As someone who has watched this show multiple times- you guys are totally right. I get why Riley was suspicious, but I also get how it could totally be written off. It’s one of the very few gripes of the show, but it’s valid!

I am not a cryer or emotional person but Erin's monologue always gets me. I struggled with infertility for years before conceiving my son and while it was easier with my daughter to fall pregnant, keeping one was another story. All in all I've had 4 miscarriages and had to abort one ectopic. Obviously those were all very emotional for me at the time but not something I lament on these days. I came to the realization a long time ago that I wouldn't have the kids I have now if not for those losses. But hearing Erin describe how her daughter would be greeted in the afterlife just brings me to tears every time. I really hope that's what happened with all my babies 🩷

I love vampirism as a metaphor for addiction/alcoholism in this ep, and how it is contrasted with vampirism as a holy experience. Riley is abstaining from alcohol just as he is abstaining from faith. Pruitt is doubling down on the path his faith has taken him on just as he is chugging the sacramental wine.
And what's tragic is that Joe's recovery was one truly positive outcome of Pruitt's actions that wasn't a "miracle." Sure, Leeza could more easily forgive him because she had been healed, but it was her faith and strength of character that actually pushed her to do that. And after that, it was Pruitt starting an AA chapter that helped Joe. Riley would've gone to AA regardless, but Joe wouldn't have! Pruitt's fulfilling his role as community leader had a genuine impact on Joe. And then he killed him.

I am really enjoying this but I do have to say that for me personally, the monologues are getting to be a little too much. On their own, they are all incredibly written and performed, so I don't want to take away from that, but when there's so many back-to-back like there has been I just feel like something is missing driving the plot forward. It's like we have to get through all these monologues first and then a really huge plot point will happen at the end of the episode. I do appreciate a slow burn but the more monologues we get, the less impactful they feel to me. I'm still very invested in the story though and have no idea where it's going after the end of this episode!
