Midnight Mass | Ep. 3

Comments

i called that it was hamish under all that makeup right at the beginning, you can’t hide those features from me!

luca

HOLYSHIT. I finally am circling back to watch these episodes with you. Of course my first time watching. AND. This episode had my jaw ON. THE. FLOOR. SO. GOOD. 🤯😭😵

Jess The Fox

Bev gives major Dolores Umbridge vibes. I want to throat punch them both every time they open their mouths.

Desiree Mclaughlin

This is sooooo good. Ya the Father Paul actor is amazing. He acts EXACTLY like all the Father's I had in middle and highschool. In conservations, very quiet, direct and always choosing their words very carefully. But in sermons and reprimanding students, very powerful and called you on your shit. Also, he is not lying, he is saving the island.

Ian A

Ooh so when the mom with dementia called him father John she recognized him because she knew him when he was young!

Gaby

Right?? Literally drives me insane!

Arwen24

So the actor who plays Father Paul has acted in the Big Short along side Steve Carell! That’s where I initially recognised him from, such a great movie

yasmin gee

Why does everyone on this island leave their blinds/curtains open?! I could not.

Gabrielle

From is by the Lost guys, Jack Bender and another guy and it’s brilliant! Are you thinking of Servant? Which starts great and gets cray! I honestly think From would be too scary! 😅

StickyKeys

As I said on the first episode, this show is so clever! Of course an extremely devout man would run into a vampire and believe it to be an angel. There's zero reason for him not to. I also mentioned that my husband is a Catholic and this is his favorite of Flanagan's. It has its legitimate criticisms of the church/God but is still extremely respectful. It's also absolutely stuffed to the brim with amazing talent. Robert Longstreet (Joe Collie), Samantha Sloyan (Bev), Hamish Linklater (Father Paul), Rahul Kohli (Sheriff), and Zach Gilford (Riley) especially are some heavy hitters in this one. And of course Kate Siegel is always amazing and has another amazing monologue coming up. This show is so great. Can't wait until next Tuesday! 🩷

The line “I want you to scream like my dad screamed that night when he was holding a hand over the bullet hole in my spine” line is possibly the best, most succinct argument for common-sense gun control I’ve ever witnessed honestly.

Sylvia

I’m so glad y’all are vibing with the absolute genius that is Hamish Linklater. How he’s not a more celebrated actor is baffling.

Sylvia

I bloody knewww you would love this. I'm not ashamed to say I paid for this purely for Midnight Mass. However, I know you're not a huge fan of Horror but FROM by M. Night Shymalan is also an incredible series. Lots of monologues and heartbreak and a mystery of a story.

Natalie Halveston

The way some angels are described in the Bible is actually nightmare fuel :D. Nothing to do with the cute little winged creatures we see in illustrations.

FrostAndTheForest

wish young monsignor wore that coat still. i mean it’d be seen as disrespectful probably but damn he looked fine in it

adriancatrin

Totally called that ending! (I mean not right away. I too thought he might be the monster or someone related to the girl Riley killed coming to get revenge or something). But I guessed it before the reveal so I'm gonna call that a win! Like I did with Hill House, I'm watching this for the first time along with you guys, and I got some serious questions! Like obviously this thing is also killing stuff on the island, so that can't be good. What happened to the dude it lured into that boarded up house? No one has noticed he's missing yet? And the priest seems to also be having some health difficulties. Like does the demon blood wear off and you have to keep drinking it in order to stay young and well? If so, how is that going to work? There's a lot in this show about alcoholism; will this blood be the new wine that the Islanders get addicted to (probably has something to say about how humans are also addicted to the idea of eternal life and trying to keep themselves young forever). So I wonder if drinking the blood will backfire somehow and make everyone even more sick. If so, Riley and the Sheriff are the two main characters they've made very clear haven't been/probably won't drink it. So maybe it will be up to them to kill the albatross/demon and save the Islanders? Anyways, that's my conjecture thus far...but we're only 3 episodes in and I've already changed my predictions like a million times, so I guess we'll see! 😄 In any case I'm enjoying the ride! And as a devout Christian myself, albeit of the Protestant variety, I'm really enjoying all the heavy-hittung faith discussions. Can't wait until next week!

Hamish linklater who plays father paul is incredible in this

Jordan Clark

Just saw that Hamish Linklater is the new animated voice for Batman: Caped Crusader came out last year. And I am on an animated superhero kick so I will be watching that. His voice is captivating as well at least in the trailer.

Taylor Olsoy

that make me snort lmao

PaigeReyNew

I honestly believe this creature is meant to be an angel of sorts. Hear me out: It feels like Flanagan rewrote the history of vampires, and gave us this immortal being that had the power to heal through a mechanism that looks like communion. But I don't mean angel in the sense of Jewish/Christian/Muslim tales, rather the real life creature from whence those tales sprung. Like ... there are things in this world akin to magic, and the real-life experiences of ancient humans who interacted with those things were the basis of tales that turned into religions. Maybe some people were in awe, and others were horrifed, so they had stories of both angels and fallen angels to make sense of it. But the mechanism by which this creature feeds became the "blood of my blood..." I dunno ... Flanagan did something truly special with this one. So many layers. Such great writing. Too much realness and emotion. Midnight Mass is my favorite episodic story, and I really can't imagine anything replacing it as #1. Ever. But buckle up guys -- we're not done with the shocks and feels.

NOSFERATU WHAT R U DOING HERE

Emily JD

my fave flanagan movie. the rest i could take or leave but gerald’s game is great

adriancatrin

Props to Bev, she’s the WORST. This show is so fantastic.

K Ray

I’m really enjoying this again with you both and loving it more the second time around. I actually now think this is Flanagans best work. So much depth and emotion with monologues galore. With the added bonus of much loved Neil Diamond music. I never thought Soolaimon would be in a TV show. Brings back lots of memories of listening to Neil Diamond Tap Root Manuscript with my mum in the kitchen back at home as a child.

Joanne McDermott

This show is so fucking good abs so powerful! Dads back getting better, his wife vision getting better AND. She is looking younger. The small details are so freaking gooood!!!!

Sabrina Bookert

I love this episode. Such an amazing reveal. If you're a Flanagan fan I'd highly recommend a Netflix movie he made called Gerald's Game, which is based on a Steven King novel.

Katie

Yes the trauma aspect is pretty real for some of us... But I just love this show.

FrostAndTheForest

I threw my snacks across the room the first time I watched this! :D Isn't it just an absolute masterpiece...

FrostAndTheForest

Robert Longstreet (Joe Collie) is one of my favorite in the Flanagan stable of actors. He’s so good as a scene partner and just chewing the scenery with monologues. Also Hamish Linklater is *chef’s kiss* This show is my personal favorite of the Flanaverse, but I also grew up in a religious school and environment so it brings back some trauma, too. But it’s perfection. Flanagan is such an emotional flim maker and it’s what makes his projects so strong.

ccochran80

I'm halfway through, but I had to stop and yell at Mike Flanagan, like HOW DARE HE?! "You reached through TIME Joe Collie! And you stole..." Me reeling through that and then immediately following it up with another amazing scene! Like give me time to BREATHE Mike Flanagan! :D Srsly tho, her monologue and Bizarro Dudley's reaction were unreal. I cry everytime I see it and today was no exception!

StickyKeys

Devils that you know, raise worse hell than a stranger!

Hey Jamie

Beth = Bev lmao

Hey Jamie

I do love this show. I’m so captivated by Hamish Linklater’s performance in this 🙂 I also find the scene between Leeza and Joe so moving and powerful

Stacy Hope

Fun little Easter egg, at the beginning of the episode during the 1st flashback, the person who helps Monsignor from wandering is Mr Mike Flanagan himself. You also see him briefly again during the next flashback.

Philip

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this one because I KNEW you guys would immediately recognize how truly incredible Hamish’s performance is when you’ve been given the additional context of his character. 😍 Isn’t he something else?! Hands down the best part of the show for me. Can’t wait for the reeeeeest 😏 Man, I forgot how much I love this one - love re-watching it with you!

Shaylla

😂😂 they’re the best

Sam

Yes! I’ve been so excited for you guys to see this episode. I really feel MM is the best in Flanaverse. Such an amazing show and so beautiful. I’m catching so much watching it again So glad you’re enjoying it- you two are by far the best reactors out there and loving your analysis

Sam

0:30 Jacob and his jubilant Krusty the Clown laugh lol

Hey Jamie

FINALLY WOOOOO

Hey Jamie

Fantastic show! I was waiting for THAT reveal, and Will and Jacob did not disappoint. 🤯🤯

Jan T

Hold on to your butts bc it is gonna be a ride. I absolutely love Flannigan. Literally everything he does is haunting and yet beautiful. His characters, his dialogue, and huge props to whoever does his casting bc how do they nail it every single time. Every single actor they choose shine in his material. Honestly he is one of the best modern director/writers. I really hope we just keep going down the Flannigan trail bc every single show (except midnight club in my opinion) is an absolute must see.

Randi Marsh

god this episode is so fucking good… my brain hasn’t been the same since

Julie

This reveal is EXACTLYYY why I wanted yall to watch this show. One of the best plot twists EVER

Taryn Pruett

I'll be so honest, I started watching this because it was Hamish Linklater and now it's up there as one of my fave shows ever

Peepli

Kristine Gjersvik

Literally watching Midnight Mass at Midnight in Aus. 😊

Jan T

“this StRanGe religion” yes, yes jacob, as someone brought up catholic, it is so strange from an outside (and sometimes inside) perspective lmao.

Dani Phantom

Hamish Linklater is absolutely incredible in this. The way he speaks just grabs your attention

Peepli

codenamewitch xx

Kristine Gjersvik
