2025-10-03 00:07:44 +0000 UTCI know it's a little late for a comment on this one, but I wanted to mention that I think Sophie's curse has more to do with her insecurities than it does with love. In the beginning of the movie, she didn't think she was beautiful, wouldn't go out with coworkers who were around her age and have fun, staying home to work instead. Throughout the movie, she seems younger when she is confident in herself and her own strengths. The moment that shows this most clearly is when Sofie is confronting Sulliman about Howl being able to solve his own problems. Sophie is completely wrapped up in defending Howl, not thinking of herself at all and absolutely rock solid in her belief that what she is saying is true. The minute Sulliman mentions Sophie being in love with Howl, all of Sophie's self-consciousness comes back in an instant. Of course she doesn't love Howl, because she's not beautiful enough to tempt him. She is just an old cleaning lady. Every insecurity shows on her face in that moment. It happens again when Howl gives Sophie the flower meadow. When Sophie sleeps, she is free of her insecurities, therefore she looks young. Anyway, them's my thoughts on the matter. Good day to y'all.
