I watched this for the first time in a long time with you. This was my first Ghibli film, before this, I hadn't ever heard of these films. This film won the oscar for best animated film in the early 2000's (can't remember the exact year) and that's what got me to check it out. There are so many other good Ghibli films. Probably my favorite is Kiki's Delivery Service.

I finally found the time to sit down and watch and this, and I'm so glad that I did. Ghibli movies always bring the same word to mind for me: wonder. They often let you take the time to just sit in a scene, look at the landscape, listen to the music. It makes the worlds they create feel so real and live in beyond what you're seeing. We don't see much more than the bathhouse, but get hints of a much larger, wider world of spirits out beyond its borders. I'm sure someone else will mention this, but the spirits in this film and other Ghibli products are in the Japanese sense of the word. Less ghosts, more anthropomorphic personifications of nature and concepts in a very animist sense. The only characters we see who are or have ever been human are Chihiro and her parents. Also, and again I'm sure people have mentioned this, but Ghibli with a J sound. I know it doesn't make linguistic sense, but Miyazaki insists. Spirited Away is commonly regarded as one of the best Ghibli films (and frequently hits top 100 films of all time lists), but the next one up in your slate is my favourite (and in my personal top 5 favourite films). Looking forward to it, and I'm sure I'll have way too much to say. Also, also: Lin is voiced by Susan Egan, who is also Rose Quartz in Steven Universe, and Meg in Hercules. Some day you'll watch Hercules and recognise her instantly. She has one of the best songs in the Disney Renaissance.

This is my second favorite Ghibli movie after Kiki. I'm really glad you enjoyed this one! I hope you watch Kiki someday as well!

Fever dream. Well done. Edit: I remember hating dubs but I was watching Anime in the 90's. It's kinda weird rewatching with dubs but they're way better than they used to be. I haven't watched this movie in so long and I remember it kinda weirded me out. This time I enjoyed it so much more. It's a fairy tale. There's whimsy and terror and innocence and monsters. I think when they were mentioning love I don't think it meant relationship type love. I think it meant general love to want the best for those around you. I get the hype. I had a great time watching.

This was the first Miyazaki I watched and I became instantly addicted. When my kids were old enough, I showed them his work and they loved it. Just recently, my daughter showed a bunch of them to her Definitely Not A Boyfriend as a test of whether he was worth spending time with. A couple of years ago, i wrote two long blog posts about my love for his work, thinking he was done. Of course, then the Boy and the Heron came out. Looking forward to going on this journey with you. Even the worst Miyazaki movie is amazing.

You yawned in sync, you and me watched most of this movie tonight.

Omg that is stacked. I wouldn’t know some of those voice actors from their names, but I haven’t seen Hercules or any of the goofy movies but people rave about both.

funnylilgalreacts

I forgot how stacked this cast is. A lot of Disney alums of course. Chihiro is Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, Haku is Goofy’s son Max, Lin is Meg from Hercules, the witch sisters are voiced by Zira from Lion King II, Kamaji is Cogsworth/Governor Ratcliffe/Dr Jumba, and it should come to no surprise that the baby was voiced by Tara Strong and even John Ratzenburger got a cameo! Also I’m pretty sure No Face is Porky Pig and the foreman is Squidward 😂

In the name of the water within me, unbind her

Patriot exclusive means only Patreon members have access to it. Me showing the movie is incredibly illegal.

I’m watching in sync but I thought patreon exclusive meant I can see what you’re watching?

what a pleasant surprise! wasn't expecting this it's still crazy to me to think that, out of all of the incredible, masterful, atmospheric Ghibli films-- this one is still clearly the best. by leaps and bounds no less

This movie is pure artistry packed into every frame. I desperately hope that Angela decides to watch more of these, because each one contains something amazing and special in their own ways.

That's exactly what the no-face spirit represents. It didn't have a personality until it began to adopt the one at the bathhouse, being one of greed and gluttony. It's like a blank canvas before it sort of "adapts to its environment", so to speak.

Peter Wyatt

First time I watched this movie, all I could say was: FANTASTIC Amazing art, animation and imagery The direct translation of the Japanese movie name to English is: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi When Chihiro enters the spirit world, Yubaba removes the second part of her name, Hiro. All that remains is the Chi part, which reads as "Sen." And Kamikakushi means spiriting away or 'hidden by god." By the way, it's pronounced jib-li, with a "j" sound. Did you also enjoy the music? Joe Hisashi is the composer and he and Miyazaki go together like Spielberg and John Williams. Hisashi is also fantastic and I had the pleasure to attend a live concert of all his and all his Ghibli movie music at Madison Square Garden last year. So many interpretations of this movie. One thing I have noticed is Miyazaki's environmental themes, with the cleansing of the stink/river god. And the filling of the Kohaku river and Haku can't finding his way home.

The studio Ghibli dubs are pretty good IMHO.

The Noface spirit leaves a lot to interpret. To me it always reflected the environment it's in. The greed of the bathhouse made it what it is (it also only started talking once it ate the frog). Chihiro was selfless enough to not take his offerings and brought it to a better environment. Also can I just say the music makes me so emotional, so beautiful and makes you contemplative.

One of my top favorite animations in the Studio Ghibli collection.
