Sharing a bit of my history :)

Just wanted to share a little bit of my history. This is the place where we stayed when we left/escaped from Czech Rep 30 years ago now. The place is located in Bavaria, right next to lake Königssee This video was taken on last years trip to Europe.
I never thought of that... thanks for your reply. I wouldn't like so much having to travel for such long times, though I think that the same amount of beauty has peculiarities from place to place that are worth enjoying. But how in a single life?

NZ is beautiful, however, most people don't realise that some parts of NZ are so far apart from each other that it's like flying from Czech Rep to Sweden. A lot of New Zealanders only visit the South Island once or twice in their life. I frequently tell people when I visit Czech Rep that flying from Auckland to Queenstown is almost like Flying from Czech Rep to Ireland, or Czech Rep to Estonia, or Czech Rep to Greece and so on. NZ has some magnificent scenery but I think a lot of places in the world are also equally beautiful :)

You're right Joakim, I realise he's not old enough yet to remember these trips, but I know it is somehow shaping his personality. Yes, any dictatorship where freedom is lost is a bad idea.

It is great to see you take your kid to places where you and your family grew up. I think it important to show them their roots. Even if your kid is not so old yet, everything he see and you tell him will be saved in a little box in the brain and he will remember it suddenly when he are older. I understand why your parent escaped from communism. Nothing good have ever come from communism.

Yes, I can see that the accommodation was a minor downside in the circumstances! Thanks for the clarification.

It was a shock for us to see the difference between Communism and the West. Every supermarket was filled with food unlike the Czech rep at the time where there was no choice and always empty shelves. Lines to get bananas etc. Everything in Germany was clean and maintained. As kids we were amazed at the cars that drove around in Germany as in CZ were only old skoda cars, lada cars and trabants. The toy selection in the shops was amazing, not just a few Russian toys like we had in CZ at the time. I think my parents were happy to be out and free at the time. The future was uncertain and the confined space was probably not ideal, but we were together as a family and were happy be living in a beautiful spot.

Certainly a beautiful lake! Places in NZ must remind you of it. Did your parents share your enthusiasm? Must have been difficult for them. Thanks for sharing!

At the time my parents thought so. This was before Communism actually fell, about 6 months before. In 1968 during the Prague Spring the Soviet Union came and closed the borders back up again and my parents were afraid it was going to be a similar story. Now looking back, Czech Rep is doing well and hopefully Communism will not return in the future. :)
