Marve - Lars Concept Sketches

Lars is the more reluctant of the two prey from chapter 3, which I really wanted his design to reflect. Being a guinea pig, there were a lot of different and very cool possibilities fur patterns, but most of the attempts I made didn't feel right for his character. He's not a guy who demands nor enjoys a lot of attention. In my head, I was certain I wanted an asymmetrical pattern, just because it'd be inherently more interesting. But they were often just a tad too interesting for Lars lol, which is why I ultimately settled on such a simple design.

Frankly, I don't like most of these sketches (aside from the cursed Quagmire one lol). The way I imagined him was just not coming through on the paper. In fact, I don't feel like Lars fully came together until after several pages into his appearence in the comic! For instance, you might notice his ears changing over the course of a few pages. I felt he looked too monkey-like with his ears up, and it seemed like most guinea pigs had their ears down anyway, so I'm not really sure why I kept drawing them up in the beginning lol.

His colours have the same thoughts as all the other characters. I chose the ones that seemed the most obvious in the moment, but am not dead set on them at all. But for this character in particular, it makes sense to choose very safe colours to reflect his reserved nature. He's not a guy with any particular fashion sense, but he wears a shirt to see Marve because it seems polite to dress nice when meeting someone new!

My favourite aspect about Lars is his name lol. You've probably noticed I love using Norwegian names. But Lars here is actually short for Larsvin (not a real name), which is one letter off from "Marsvin", the Norwegian word for guinea pig. I'm admitedly pretty proud of that one haha!

As an American, and one who doesn’t travel, it’s interesting to see how much American entertainment has made its way into Europe. I’m like, you actually know our TV and cinema, lol? I suppose it’s one way to learn English.
