Espen Concept Sketches

Espen is Marve's best friend, one of the most important people in his life. To this end, making Espen a dorky friendly dog was an obvious conclusion! He's not modeled on any specific breed really, so whatever you think fits him best is probably right. Maybe he's some kinda mix even?
You can see how the broad strokes were set in stone from the very beginning. But finding the exact right look for him took some tries. But what I found to work the best was to simply make his head as perfectly spherical as possible lol. It was also this point that started to solidify kind of the art style for all other characters, like the simple spherical eyes. I really dig this mix of really cartoony faces on top of more detailed and rendered bodies.
As a minor note, I always had the thought that his sweater should have a hood, but I ended up dropping this after a few pages, mainly because it just didn't show well with the black stripes. And removing the hood made his outfit slightly more different from Marve's.
