These are the first sketches I ever did of Marve!
I didn't alwas know what Marve was gonna look like, so I experimented with a few different species that might fit. I knew I was looking for a design that's friendly and not very intimidating, but that suits well for getting real fat from his prey. I also didn't want him to be a species known for being large, which is why I scrapped the shark, bear and hippo designs, because a smaller species helps conve the idea that Marve is going in over his head a bit. The hippo sketch is very much Murray-coded, and that's actually what inspired Marve's colour scheme!
I didn't really intend him to be a frog right away though. I was actually trying to draw some kind of lizard, though not any specific one. That's why his tail is so big in this first sketch. My furry hot take: I hate drawing tails, and I hate figuring out how they work together with regular clothes. Tails are great, don't get me wrong! I just hate drawing them, lol.
On the second page you can also see me going through a ton of names before settling on Marve. I found it really difficult to choose the right name for him, but I had some criteria: I wanted to envoke Murray by giving him an M-name, and I wanted the name to be Norwegian. So, in the end I chose Marve, after the classic Norwegian TV character, Marve Fleksnes!
