2021-05-30 10:37:14 +0000 UTCIt’s my guilty pleasure show too 🙈 The producer of the show did a “tell-all” interview several years ago (after TaEun’s season was finished) where they addressed some of the controversy. It’s been a while since I watched it, but from what I remember, they clarified that the only “scripting” came from the planning of actual dates - like often, but not always, the dates/activities would be planned and decided on by the production team, not the couple. The actual words coming out of any of the contestants mouths at any given time though we’re totally unscripted and authentic. They also mentioned Taemin and Naeun as one of their personal favorite couples, because their chemistry developed so naturally! I do wish the show did better at protecting idols from fans though - that one episode in Myeongdong at the mall is still kinda painful :( I also feel like the length of the show is a bit mean, especially for couples that seemed to genuinely have feelings for each other, because they would literally be dating on the show for 8-12 months! That’s a long time to be “fake-dating” someone only to be forced to break-up at the end or get torn apart by your fans... Of course, the length of the show is also one of the main reasons these couples feel so real by the end, which is why people love watching it so much 😭 I didn’t know there was a big issue about Taemin’s image on the show though - I knew most people saw him as a little immature, but tbh I never thought it was all that shocking considering he was only 20 at the time and (allegedly) had never even been on a date before, much less been in a relationship. Besides, for all his occasional naivety (and to be fair, Naeun’s as well), I thought he left an overall good impression as a “husband.” I wish they had been able to stay in contact at least as friends after the show. There is a kinda funny/kinda sad video from when Shinee and Apink were rivals for #1 on a music show one week during 1 of 1 promotions (the only time they’ve competed against each other post WGM I think, and this was like 3 years later). When Shinee won, the other members all casually greeted Apink as they walked by to exit the stage but Taemin practically RAN to the front of the stage to avoid being pictured with Naeun. He obviously knows fans still keep an eagle eye on the two of them to this day. Anyways, it’s gonna be fun going down memory lane with Torsie! Maybe she’ll do some Apink reactions in the future too (this show is the reason I became a Pink Panda haha and Apink just celebrated their 10th anniversary)!

I must admit I still watch that show every once in awhile as a guilty pleasure. 🤫 It’s kinda polarizing in the fandom for the way Taemin’s image is depicted and some behind the scenes stuff that went on, but let’s face it that show did that crap with everybody. I still love it though, it’s so cute and funny and a side of Taemin we never really get to see cause he quite frankly doesn’t hang around girls much. Which we can probably dump on their heads too what with all the shipping 🙄 My main problem with the show was the show runners underestimating the fandoms involved and their reactions to the things they had them do. It was a serious problem a few times and honestly dangerous of both the idols and the fans. Cause they liked to pretend they are filming low budget. You know just a couple of cameras and no one else. But in fact a huge production with a full crew and a big crowd of fans, mostly Shawols, hanging out and watching them shoot all day 😂. You could see it when Key did his run on WGM and they would put out bts clips and like the whole street would be full of fan girls watching. Oh! Maybe you can do Key’s we got married after Taemin’s! You can really see the difference between how the two took on their roles. It’s really funny cause Taemin and Naeun were so young, the youngest ever I believe, he was 20 and she was 19 so they just followed whatever the directors planned for them, but in Key’s you can see him take control of the narrative and push back on the forced intimacy and grand love story shtick and just give us funny, relatable and sweet moments. And it worked for him. Maybe cause he saw first hand what Taemin went through and refused to have the same happen again? or just cause he is Key and refuses to give up control of anything he is involved in? Either was the fandom didn’t react nearly so badly during his stint and he was even able to stay in contact with Arisa afterward. Meanwhile Taemin and Naeun can’t even be in the same building without shippers acting a fool even to this day. I remember in 2019 Taemin went to an event, K-con I think, and one of the Apink members was also there, not even Naeun herself, and they still managed to fold that into their grand shipping conspiracy. They even said that cause Taemin had the bottled water she endorsed in his kitchen at the back of his Taem-log it was proof they are dating 😓 Anyway I’m really looking forward to watching WGM with you! I think you’ll really like it and the episodes where the members show up are gold! Peak comedy. Both SHINee and Apink are hilarious and they were so amused at the two of them and ran them both ragged. And as a bonus we get a bit of EXO a couple of times too! Fun times ahead! Sorry for the essay and thank for watching with us! 🥰
