2021-05-01 14:27:01 +0000 UTCYes, Taemin is high art, which I have appreciated since getting to know him and SHINee. He never fails to evoke a response, does he? You spoke about being a jazz singer. Well, since knowing Taemin's music, I've been daydreaming about finding jazz clubs to relax in after it's safe to venture out. I think Taemin reminds me of jazz, although every singer I've seen in person was female. Blues singers too. I'd love to hear your music sometime too, Tors1e.

2021-05-01 02:26:24 +0000 UTCI think Want and Criminal are tied for me as my favorite Taemin title tracks.... they both just feel so quintessentially "him." I think you're so right about Taemin's mastery of his art - he's talked about in at least one broadcast that he feels strongly that he has never taken the easy way and that he's been working almost every day of his life since he became a trainee at 11, and that it frustrates him to know some people will always just view him a "naturally talented kid who got lucky." Obviously that's understandable, but it also highlights something that I think a lot of casual fans and the general public wouldn't necessarily think about: he is so exceptional as a high artist now BECAUSE he spent so many years practicing and learning the way idols are supposed to present themselves, the way they are supposed to perform, and the way they "should" want to be perceived. Until his solo debut (and honestly, until releasing Move), Taemin was the perfect, conventional, publicly palatable idol. The most shocking thing he ever did was wear hair extensions and debut as a soloist before his older group members. This isn't to say Taemin is all that avante-garde now - personally I think he really excels at toeing the (admittedly blurry) line of "artsy and experimental" and "appealing to the general public." That is to say, he's not only a master of his artistic craft, but is incredibly experienced and savvy in the business realm of music as well. Anyways, this was a really long-winded way of saying I think that he is so revolutionary as an artist largely BECAUSE of his extensive experience learning how to fit the mold before breaking it - and why so many newer artists attempting to follow in his footsteps are struggling, no matter how incredibly talented they are. It really comes down to hard-won expertise through experience. Also yes!! I truly hope Taemin is able to get some good out of his service in the military. Based on Key's time in the same military branch, we can at least look forward to a decent amount of military content from him (maybe he'll do musicals like Onew!), but hopefully Taemin will be able to find some personal gain during his service (whether it be new friends, new artistic inspiration, or just a blessedly normal work and sleep schedule for a little while lol)!
