Poll: Possible side-project and successor
Added 2023-12-24 04:13:37 +0000 UTCThis will happen at some point, so I'd like some feedback on this.
I've been hinting at mulling side-projects the first time over a year ago already, it just never materialized due to time constraints and because I didn't want to slow down TM development (or end it in the middle of Chapter 2), but I'd like to reach a point where I can do this for a living, and although the support level for TM has steadily creeped up over time, it's no secret that TM isn't exactly the most successful patron-funded project out there.
I'm aware that the somewhat sluggish pace of progress has played at least a role in this, as well as some early-game quality issues, but I also can't shake off the feeling that TM! simply might not be conceptually appealing enough (or simply not good enough) to reach a significantly larger audience and level of support.
The thing is: This is incredibly hard to find out for sure without actually going for one or two of those other ideas and then seeing how popular they are (or aren't) in comparison to TM.
So, to get at least a bit of a feel for
- which idea might make the most sense as possible main project successor,
- which one might make more sense as side-project, and
- which idea I should drop or at least delay and revise,
I'd like some feedback on a few game concepts.
Disclaimer: Don't worry, I won't suddenly abandon TM regardless of this polls' results. There are certain things I still want to and will include in TM, I made the other poll for a reason.
I also don't want to end its development before I'm sure what to do next (or actually have another project up and running that is popular enough to pull off a seamless transition).
So for now, this is mostly to give me an idea what to prioritize as potential parallel project, less about a replacement.
Still, TM development wouldn't continue for another 2 years even if it suddenly became 5 times as popular, and if the progress remains this sluggish, I have to think of alternatives - at least parallel side projects - if I really want to make a living out of this.
Anyway, on to the
Question: "Which of these 3 concepts sounds most interesting to you as A) a prioritised main project, or at least B) a side gig?"
Concept 1: Free Use harem VN
You live in a world where barely any men are left (much less any decent ones), which results in women being far more active, far more nice to men like you and far more sex-positive, going as far as giving you a "free use" pass casually.
This game wouldn't have much story apart from the setting (yes, less story than TM), and would focus more on kinks like exhibitionism, public sex, sex in the most crazy places and situations, and higher quantity of girls than TM.
Apart from very few exceptions, nearly every girl and nearly every scene would be optional, the game would be quite sandbox-focused.
Depending on player feedback, it might get an actual Dating system, too (even if girls are easy to convince to have sex, players might still want to get to know them better anyways).
Also, the game would be in higher resolution (1080p), with slightly better lighting, moans, and the quality of scenes would be at or above the latest TM scenes and MNN scenes (so, better camera work etc. than in earlier TM scenes).
Basically, the 'vanilla' sex scenes would be more interactive, like in "My Naughty Neighbor", while the other scenes would be more kinky.
Oversimplified TL;DR: Imagine the best elements from Free Use Planet, MNN and Total Maidness!, with a fresh and larger selection of girls and better graphics.

Concept 2: Epic story-driven fantasy sandbox VN
A fantasy-ish, more story-focused game, but still with lots of sandbox content, with elves, demons, angels, catwomen, more elves, elementals, spirits, and (female) heroines (both living and summoned 'ghosts') from various races.
Setting: Earth is overrun by *SPOILER*, and you suddenly find yourself the only (male) human survivor when you wake up on a... tiny world with a holiday resort for heroes?!
But the resort isn't getting many guests nowadays... You first need to gain the trust of the girls running the resort (Spoiler: only one of them is human), then gradually lead the resort back to its former glory through skill, wit and cunning.
But in the process, you gradually find out there's a dark secret lurking behind the former lack of customers, and why they're all female...
This one will have more gameplay and MUCH more story than Concept 1 and 3, but that also means less sandbox content per release (on average, at least), and it'll take quite some time to get to the story conclusion.
I don't plan it to be nearly as long of a journey as games like Corrupted Kingdoms (I don't want to be at only 50% of the story after 2-3 years, I want the story to be more fast-paced), but if you want a rough idea what kind of game it's going to be, think somewhat like Corrupted Kingdoms and Champion of Realms for the story (but more fast-paced!), with a sprinkle of Tropicali (in terms of Chapter 1 gameplay; Chapter 2 and 3 will be... different), and you wouldn't be too far off the mark.
I got plenty of my own ideas of course, this is just to give you an approximate idea of what to expect.
For Chapter 2, let's just say the story will get slightly darker and the gameplay part will change, but let's just say I fully intend to avoid running into similar pitfalls as Corrupted Kingdoms did with Act 3... there won't be any "start with almost zero content", chapter transition will be much more seamless than that.
Oh and yes, it would have choice-based endings (and not just palette swaps).
And while the main cast will not be *that* large, there'll be tons of side girls, especially in Chapter 2. Think about 8-10 main girls and dozens of side girls.
Also, since this would eventually become a much bigger game than TM or Concept 1 in terms of quantity of content, we might have to go with a lower resolution, and no sex anim sounds or moans (believe it or not, those *do* slow down development per scene a little, and with the higher quantities of characters and scenes this game would feature, it would become even worse).
Alternatively, we might got for 1080p but split the chapters into separate games to keep the download- and installation sizes in check.

Concept 3: Producer of lewd content with popular female character from various media
I recently told an IRL friend about my gamedev endavours, and while they aren't too keen on joining me as team member for TM or one of the above concepts (damn...), they had an idea of their own they want to pursue (and which I actually kind of like, too), and asked me for a collab (basically, I'd help out with girl designs, rendering and coding in return for rev share, which may help me quit my main job eventually and free up even more time for development).
In this game, you'd be running a production company for lewd content, and "for some reason", girls that look suspiciously familiar (from various anime, manga, games etc.) want you to hire them for money and/or fun.
Somewhat similar to Concept 1 in this regard, this wouldn't have much story (or rather, pretty much none, apart from the setting as such), and virtually all girls would be optional.
Gameplay-wise, this would effectively be a simple management sim; it would not be a dating sim or story VN, simply because there already are dating sim and story VNs with popular characters, so instead this would take a different approach and go the business route. Though the 'videos' you shoot with them will often be parodies of (fictional) stories (or parts of those stories), with some references, nods (and stabs) at various works, so it won't be without shortstories or dialogue, just no over-arcing plot or long dating sim paths.
You get sent resumes, conduct job interviews with girls you're interested in (which may 'escalate' a bit, they really want that job, afterall...), after hiring them you can then produce pin-ups, vanilla 'videos', and optionally more kinky stuff (depending on your tag filters and their own preferences and limits).
You pay them for produced content upfront, but then make weekly money from sales, and use that income to hire more girls. Possibly other options to spend money on will be added for variety (and to avoid the game becoming too easy too early).
In terms of graphics quality and sound effects, this would be about on par with MNN and Concept 1.
Compared to Concept 1, instead of the more exhib/public/harem-focused angle, this one would be more about getting it on with popular female characters (we'd focus more on ones that haven't appeared in half a dozen other lewd 'parody' games yet, with some exceptions) and kinks not covered by Concept 1.
The (100% optional) kinkier options would go more in the pr0n direction, and apart from more vanilla stuff, offer options for tags like DP, BBC, gangbang, bukkake etc.
Again, all optional, but it wouldn't be a pure MC-only-harem game (although all of those options could be ignored or hidden through settings, so you could still play this like a harem game anyway, you'd only have a few options less).
This one would be even more focused on quantity of girls than Concept 1, and the interviews and parody 'videos' would be more tongue-in-cheek in tone, with self-irony, mild sarcasm, lighthearted stabs at annoying MCs from the original works, and so on.
Basically, compared to Concept 1 it would cover more kinks, have a bit more gameplay, feature popular characters (and more characters), have parody elements, but have zero dating sim elements.
Compared to Concept 2, the only similarities would be the high quantity of characters, and that some of the side-characters appearing in Concept 2 would also 'look familiar' if you know your way around anime, manga and VNs.
----------------------------
Summary: All 3 concepts have their pros and cons, and it's entirely fine if some (or all...) of them don't speak to you; in fact, considering what kind of game TM is, I have a hunch in what direction the results might lean.
Don't let that stop you from voting for what sounds best/most interesting to you, that's the entire point.
Please vote for your fav idea as next main project (1 vote), and for your 2nd fav as side gig (1 vote); this is still hypothetical, I just want to know which idea makes you go "That would be amazing if done well!", and which makes you go "Doesn't sound super interesting, but could make for some neat 'entertainment', or at least f*p material".
If you think none of them sound interesting enough for a main project/TM replacement, please at least cast a vote on the side-gig options.
If you'd like some question(s) answered before voting, feel free to ask me in the comments or via DM.
