Yes, even with their combined weight it would be difficult to break a desk. Everything else could be sorted and covered up next day, but not the desk.

I think that could have lead to Sarah arriving at work the next day to John the interim CEO getting to her office and walking in a minute after she gets there to find the state of it as she starts trying to tidy. For this plot assume he didn't see them through the window. I feel like the possibility of being seen by people she knows is enough for the plot for now without actually being seen. He assumes she wrecked her own office in anger after not getting the CEO job. She doesn't correct that theory as it's better than admitting what really happened. (Not sure breaking a big wooden desk is explainable away). Which leads to trouble at work and paying for the damages, which puts the job security and finances elements of the couples troubles back in play and gives Lester more room to worm his way in.
