Monthly Update and Pregnancy Poll Results

Another month has gone by and more progress has been made on Waifu Wonderland!

I'm writing this a few days before the 1st, because I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out on August 30th. I'm not sure how long I'm going to be unable to work because of that, so I decided to write the update a little early.

Let's start with the official poll results.

I'm not going to do the graph this time. It was an overwhelming "Yes" with not a single vote for "No."

I was pretty happy to see that. I've always wanted to make a game with impregnation as a big mechanic, and now that I know people want as much impregnation as possible, I'll be including it as much as possible. There will still be some characters that can't be impregnated, but as long as it makes sense with the character or I can find a way to make it work, I'll include it.

Pregnancy is coming in the v0.2 update, and here's all the characters that will have pregnancy right away -

Shizuka (you have to do her storyline first)
Goth Random Skank (the static one in the apartments only)
Gyaru Random Schoolgirl (part of Shizuka's storyline)
Random Cheerleader (just the hidden static one)

Which means there's 8 total women that you have a chance to impregnate right away! Aoyagi has a 100% chance, and Shizuka and the Random Schoolgirl get one pregnancy as part of Shizuka's storyline, but otherwise, the chance of impregnation will vary depending on the character. You'll be paid for each successful impregnation and birth, and the amount will vary depending on the character.

And then here's existing characters that I plan on implementing pregnancy for in future updates -

Hikari (you'll need to complete the lab storyline)
Kaori
Seika

Then existing characters who might get pregnancy in a future update. It just wouldn't make much sense from a story perspective if any of them got pregnant, but if I can think of a way to make it work, I'll add it in. -

Finally, characters who are not planned to ever get pregnant. I'll explain why next to them -

Rinko - It wouldn't make sense for her to get pregnant. She's too career driven. She's already on birth control and makes you wear a condom. If she somehow did get pregnant, she would quietly take care of it before anyone knew, so it wouldn't affect her job.
Shiori - She can't get pregnant. It's a part of her character. I made a little hint about it in game if you chose her as your starter, but it'll be more explicitly stated in the MMC story.
All roaming "random" characters - This is for a couple reasons. For one, they disappear after your encounter with them. If you can't track them down, you'll never really know if they're pregnant and wouldn't be able to find them again after 7 days to have the baby and get paid. Then it would also just be a nightmare in terms of programming. I'd have to set it up so that it would basically lock that one specific random character somewhere and you'd have to be told where they are so you could find them again. Or I'd have to set it up so that they keep spawning like normal and you'd just have to randomly bump into them again, which would be a mess of a lot of different variables that would take a lot of time to figure out and test. I don't want to spend a week or longer on this. That's why I made it so you can impregnate the static versions. That way there's at least one of each that you can still impregnate.
The working girls - Much like Rinko, it just wouldn't make any sense. Their job is to have sex. They aren't going to let themselves get pregnant from a client.

Pregnant characters moving forward -

I'm going to do my best to make as many new characters able to get pregnant as possible. There may be some that just aren't possible though. Like I'm not sure if I'll be able to have any of the MMC characters get pregnant. I'm going to try and make it possible, but it just kind of depends how the programming side ends up once all the characters are added and the story is over. Then as of now, I haven't thought of a way for the lab storyline characters to get pregnant. If I do, they'll all get pregnancy added, but if I don't, then the last one wont get pregnancy either.

Any new unique side character will definitely have pregnancy though. And I'll be sure to include a static random character of each type who you can impregnate as well.

Current Status of v0.2 -

As of now, the broken preview build is out for Waifu Early Access patrons. This includes the opening of the lab storyline and Almiranda's repeatable scene. Aoyagi and her full pregnancy. Pregnancy for Sakura and the Random Skank. Then the opening part of Shizuka's storyline. I made a bunch of other back-end fixes and adjustments as well, but that's the big content additions so far.

It seems like a lot, but this is really just about a week or two of work. The things that take the longest are the new scene artworks.

Right now, I'm shooting for a full release of v0.2 into early access on Sept 7th at the earliest, and Sept 14th at the latest. To help get v0.2 out potentially faster, I'm considering pushing the new scenes for Ayako, Kaori, and Shiori to the next update. I decided to implement impregnation for Kaori with her new scene, and also her unlock for if you didn't choose her at the start of the game. I'm just not sure how long it will take to implement. Since she's a starter, her programming side is a bit more complicated than most characters. I'm not sure how long it will take to implement both her normal unlock and pregnancy. Then I don't want to implement new scenes for the starters unless I'm able to implement a scene for all three in the same update. I want to make sure everyone gets a new scene, no matter which starter they chose. Since I have to make 2 new pieces of artwork, that's a minimum of 2 days for that alone, then at least part of a 3rd for implementation. So I'm going to be doing that last. If it hits next Friday and everything else is done but their scenes, I'll release v0.2 without them and have that be the first thing I do when I start working on the next update.

After v0.2 -

Speaking of the next update, once v0.2 launches, I'm going to be doing releases a bit differently. Up until now, I was working on the next major update and also iterative updates at the same time. I'm not going to be doing this anymore. I liked the idea of having a bigger update later with smaller updates in the meantime, but it was a lot to juggle. At this point, I'm mostly just going to be finishing out storylines and filling out the world anyway. Unless the game suddenly gets more support with the launch of v0.2, I wont be doing any big storylines like the lab storyline again. There's a couple smaller ones I'll be including, like one with your neighbors in the apartment complex, but that's only 2 characters. It also felt a little weird holding onto characters without them being part of a shared storyline. So I'm just going to do what I can each month and release whatever I've got done each month. It may be 2 characters, it may be 8, it just depends how much I can get done.

As for more specifics on what I'm going to include in the game after v0.2 leading up the Steam launch of the game, I've separated things into "needed" and "would be nice". I've decided that once the "needed" characters are all in the game, I'll consider the game "done" and able to launch on Steam. However, I don't want to launch until around November at the earliest. So if I get done with the "needed" parts first, I'll add in some "would be nice" stuff.

That's all the needed stuff. Which comes out to 30 pieces of completely new artwork, 5 pregnant variations, and then either 5 more variations or 5 3D character CG and scenes. Which means that it's roughly the same amount as v0.1 to v0.2. If it takes the same amount of time to get from v0.2 to v0.3, then with just the needed stuff, v0.3 would be done around January. Of course, 3 of those are just going to be faces, so they wont take too long. And this also assumes that I wont get the new scenes for Kaori and Shiori done in time for v0.2. If they do get done, that's 2 less and one less pregnancy variations. The random sets aren't going to be nearly as large as the current ones either, and I've got the coding setup for those to work and can just copy and paste now. Making them faster as well. The only new mechanics being an office job means that I wont have to spend as much time making new systems either. So I'm hoping that things go a bit faster than they did for v0.2.

So, quite a bit here. This is basically everything that I had originally wanted to include up to v0.3. This would be more than 137 total. Since this doesn't account for variations or the number of different types of cut-ins or gloryholes. I'm definitely not going to get to all of these on top of the needed stack before November, but it's a fun little grab bag to pull from. If the game does end up getting more support after v0.2 or ends up being successful on Steam, then I'll be more like to be able to add all of this in eventually.

What's coming next then? -

I have all of this stuff here, and you may be wondering what order this stuff is coming in. I had a fairly strict plan for who to include when when going from v0.1-0.2, but this time, I'm not going to have a specific plan. I'm just going to work on whatever I feel like at the time. I think that having to work on stuff that I didn't always want to made for slower progress. So this time, I want to kind of leave it up in the air. If I want to work on a scene for Seika one day then do the random beach babe the next, then that's what I'm going to do.

The only exception is the first update. The first update I'm going to be doing the content that got pushed back. This is the new scene for the working girls, Minori, and then if I don't get them done, the new scenes for the starters. From there, I'll start randomly picking from the needed list until it's done.

Certain things will still come together though. Like Hikari's scene will unlock after doing all of the other lab characters, so I'm not going to do the last lab character and then make people wait for Hikari's scene. I'll be sure to do them both. Same with the apartment neighbor/daughter. I need to do both of them in the same update, because otherwise there would be placeholder art there for one of them, which would be weird.

However, I do want to mention that while the first section is labeled "needed", if I do get to the end of December and there's still a lot of stuff on that list, I will have to start cutting content. I've mentioned before that I'm moving to Japan early next year. I have a job waiting for me, and if the game isn't being supported, I'm just not going to be able to dedicate time to it. Moving to another country is a lot on it's own, but I'll also need to be learning the language, and I'll be working full time. If the stories about work culture in Japan are true, I'll be working a lot too. So I for my own sanity, the goal is to have the game out on Steam before then. Unfortunately, I have no idea when I'm actually leaving. They've said it just kind of depends. It could be anywhere between the end of January to sometime in March. So I'm going to be releasing the game come January. Again, unless the game suddenly starts to get a lot of support. I will absolutely make time if there's a lot of people supporting the game though! I may have to slow down for a month to move, but I'll definitely keep working on making Waifu Wonderland the game I originally envisioned it to be as long as it's hitting the support goals!
