Creative Coders BCN / Back to the Future of the Internet / Anna Shams Ili

Hi Creative Coders!

I hope you are all doing well! Today I have a few exciting things to share with you.

Creative Coders BCN

Until today I did not share a lot about this project here on my Patreon, but since 2023, together with my friend Felix Martinez, I have organized 5 meetups for Creative Coders in Barcelona. the group is called “Cretive Coders BCN” and we meet at the studio space of an agency called “Feels Like Studio”. Until today we had amazing guests on spot, like Lena Weber, Levoxtrip, Monica Losada and more. Last time we did a hackathon on random compositions, which was a lot of fun. And today was be the 5th event with a talk by Esen Ka and a live coding session with me, creating a  submission for the 128kb challenge.

The 128kb Challenge

The 128kb challenge that I have announced lately could become an important part of my teaching in the future. I am deeply convinced that working with tight limitations is a super effetive way of learning to design for a sustainable future. This idea drives me a lot these days and I’ve discovered treasures of inspiration in the realm of low technology. I don’t know if you have already discovered my first article on my freshly launched blog “downgrade”, where I share some of my thoughts about this trajectory.

Back to the Future of the Internet

Next week will be very exciting, because I have the honor give a talk at an event at Akasha Hub in Barcelona, to discuss the future of the Internet. The other speakers are Kris de Decker, the head behind https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/ and Roel Roscam Abbing, a designer and researcher who is writing a dissertation on alternative social media based on the fediverse. My talk will present the 128kb challenge as a prototype for a simple social network for our Creative Coding community.

A Conversation wit Anna Shams Ili

Last but not least I want to share an new interview with you: When I met Anna Shams Ili at Processing Community Day in Copenhagen this year I was very impressed by her work as a community builder. I think we have a few things in common. She is one of the founders of CURSOR, a critical online magazine about technology, but also conducts offline workshops for Creative Coding. Her talk at PCDCPH 2023 was amazing and so I wanted to also share her thoughts with you. Click here to check out this freshly released interview.

Here are the latest additions to the 128kb challenge:

"timeless" by Omid Nemalhabib

"Bend but don't break" by Esen Ka

"Radial Flower" by COPE Studio

"decision fatigue" by me

That's it for today. Probably these gifs will look terrible in the e-mail. Let's see.

Have a great week!

Tim
