Mastering the Modulo Operator (%)

Hi everyone,

I hope you are doing well!☀️

A few weeks ago I published a roadmap for the development of my courses, which should set a tight pace. One of the courses I had planned to publish soon was "Form follows Music". I was supposed to have full mastery of this topic for several reasons: First, the course content is based on a project I already did in 2018 (or was it 2017?), second, I already gave a workshop that was about this very topic. Nevertheless, I had a hard time writing the lessons for this course. The reason: because I haven't fully understood it yet. I can easily write the code that creates the visuals I want, but there's still a missing building block, a kind of fog on my map: the underlying logic of distributing data into a two-dimensional grid, specifically the modulo operator.

I've been using the modulo operator in my code for years, mostly to drive animations, but also to create interesting patterns. But now I realized that I can't explain it properly and that it offers a lot of exciting possibilities, of which I only know a fraction.

That's why I decided to develop a little course out of it, which I call "Modulo Mixtape" and in which I reveal and present the versatile use cases of the Modulo operator.

This time I would like to involve you in this: Attached you'll find the code snippets I've written so far for the course. I'd like to invite you to experiment with them, develop your own sketches with them, and then share the results on Discord in the #modulo channel for discussion. Maybe you have completely different ideas than I do and you can think of completely new applications? Maybe you have resources on the topic that could be exciting for me and others?

As always, I'm totally happy about your feedback! Feel free to leave a comment here on Patreon if you have any thoughts on the topic.

Have a nice weekend! ✌️

Many greetings,🙌

Tim
