More Secondary and Guest Characters

Although I’ve always loved creating characters, I’m not always fully involved in their creation process. Sometimes the ideas are well-structured... other times, a character is a guest, and in some cases, they’re made in a rush just to fill a gap.

But does that help or hurt the story? It depends.

Fern’s mother appeared early in the planning stages of the comic, even though she only showed up five months later. From the beginning, I knew she would work in a medical field or in something more intimate, like massage therapy, for example.

Something entirely different happened with the bunny character, Rowan’s college friend. She was created on the spot, without much thought given to her personality. Her visual design was all I focused on, in fact, I didn't remember she already had a name!

Some characters, I don’t decide on at all — not the personality, not even the design. They’re guest characters, created by my supporters and included with full permission. Just like in an RPG where dice determine the outcome, these characters are the “wild cards” that can show up. In these cases, I might suggest something, but the character’s owner decides what actually happens.

Many times, I find myself more excited to see what these guest characters will do, because it’s always something new. It makes my creative world feel alive, where the characters and their creators shape the direction of the story, often surprising even me.

Having people beside me gives me strength. Seeing other OCs (original characters) appear in my stories feels like being surrounded by friends when I read my own work. I’ll definitely miss them if they ever “move out of the story,” but like we said in another post: not everything in life is under our control, life just happens.

And you? How are your friends?
