The Various Masks We Wear - Day and Night

It is very common in society to have “social masks,” which are simply the differences in interactions between the people or groups we know. After all, you probably don’t speak to your teacher the same way you speak to your best friends.

Perhaps here at Pink Fur Comics, we have two “masks” of Fern, one in Warm and the other in Blaze.

The separation of these masks will be clearer in the comic book magazine we are finishing editing (yes, it’s taking longer than I imagined). In it, we notice differences in the script and the artwork.

Warm is always set during the day, focusing on interpersonal relationships and, literally, the “day-to-day” life. The panels are less dynamic, with straight angles and more typical viewpoints (almost like a Brazilian novela). The script is slower, fewer things happen, and the text carries as much or more weight than many of the images. It’s a simple world, typical of Fern, where she has control over her relationships.

Blaze is always set at night, focusing on more intimate relationships and Fern’s discoveries. In this “mask,” our character doesn’t always know what’s going on or what she’s doing. This connection to the night, to the unknown, is reflected in dynamic panels, darker and lighter contrasting colors, and many expressions. Could this be a baroque comic? Oops, that’s a topic for another blog! Let’s go back to this blog.

Warm and Blaze aren’t separate stories… A more attentive reader will notice how they create a single timeline, whether through places, poses, or even a clock.

I wish I could separate my social masks the same way I separate my comics, because in the stories I have control over what happens; in real life, I don’t.

And you? Do you wear social masks too?

Ps. Tomorrow I'll start new Warm pages, come to Discord to see it live! <3
