What’s behind isn’t always less important, sometimes, it matters more than we expect.
Back in December, when I posted my first pages, I got two comments that made me reflect a lot about the background of the story… not the script, but the actual drawing!
I usually draw everything in an app called SketchUp, made mainly for people who design houses (Look, Rowan’s popping up in me again 😅). I play around like in “The Sims,” building a whole narrative about what’s behind the characters. It sets the tone for the scene many times.
My first background draws is the Fern and Rowan University. After some comments on Webtoon, I realized they were “lifeless,” sterile… and anyone who’s been to any university knows they’re full of plants… So why didn’t I remember them?
The characters’ university is based on the University of São Paulo (USP), which I attended for a long time and still participate in activities. It’s a place with lots of trees, a forest in the middle of the city, and I love all that green. So, HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THEM?
In my personal story, my background has frustration.
I was a teacher for a long time, and as I told a supporter, being a teacher is different from teaching. And when I started teaching, I started to get frustrated because everyone I wanted to help, my students, were discouraged by other teachers. So, I was the school’s troublemaker. I quit that profession because of that and for THAT reason: being wrong for trying to help my students.
My life background is about helping students who suffered bullying for being different. Many were even furries in their real lives, and I just wanted them not to suffer… Maybe that’s why I set a story in a University… because it was what they dreamed of.
Warm is more than just a comic, it’s a treatment for a trauma in my life background.
And you? Have you been treating your traumas?
